Hopefully they are allowed to lease some of the real estate, the $2B illiquid gift isn’t going to help much with that if it can only be used for constructing a university on top of

When we are not discouraging foreign students from coming and paying tuition?

Sure, but there are also heavy costs to building a new university from scratch, especially at a time when the fiscal pressures on the sector are contractionary. And also there are tradeoffs between agglomeration effects vs the marginal social value of investing in less well-endowed areas

Heads up for book authors: I’ve stumbled into a LLM-powered scam that invites authors for seemingly journalistic interviews, then asks for a financial contribution to cover publicity costs. (I didn’t realize it was LLM driven until I received a second invite with very similar language)
Dear Dr. Kopp,
I'm Beth Golay, presenter and broadcaster with
KMUW 89.1 FM in Wichita and host of Marginalia, and I'm reaching out because Economic Risks of Climate Change: An American Prospectus caught my attention for the way it attempts to give shape and scale to the economic risks created by a changing climate across the United States.

What particularly stood out to me is the book's geographic approach to climate risk. Rather than treating the economic consequences of climate change as one uniform national problem, the prospectus examines how exposure can differ from one part of the country to another, affecting everything from storm damage and agriculture to labor productivity, public health, energy systems, and other aspects of regional economies.Hi Beth.
Could you please tell me the five day weather forecast for your location and the location of each of the recipients of your invite email?
Thanks,
BobDear Bob,

Thank you for your reply. Absolutely I checked the five-day forecasts for the locations represented in the invitation. For Wichita, we’re looking at a mix of showers and thunderstorms over the next couple of days, followed by some clearer weather toward the weekend. Around Rutgers in New Brunswick, the forecast is mostly sunny to begin, with warmer weather later in the week and a chance of showers toward Sunday. Palo Alto is looking mostly sunny and dry over the next several days, with temperatures warming toward the weekend, while Chicago is expecting some rain over the next couple of days followed by clearer and mostly sunny conditions through the weekend.

It’s interesting how different the forecasts are across the four locations, even over such a short period. I hope that gives you what you were looking for.

I also wanted to briefly follow up on the interview invitation and provide a little more detail about how the conversation works.

There are good reasons why people don’t put me in positions to deal with these sorts of issues, but if I had to solve this problem, I’d probably try to build this as a new school in partnership with UM and/or FIU, rather than create a new, unneeded university from scratch
150
Bob Kopp @bobkopp.net · 14h
Or maybe they do need new universities in Florida because the De Santis is working so hard to destroy the public universities there? Even so — Miami already has the state’s top private research university
120
Bob Kopp @bobkopp.net · 14h
If you’re going to build new university campuses, maybe they should be somewhere where there aren’t already a lot of universities?
130
Bob Kopp @bobkopp.net · 14h
If $2B were sold and placed in the endowment, that’d translate into $100M/yr — a nice operating budget for a new school, to be sure, maybe even enough to have a nice building in Pittsburgh for the school. But if the real estate just has to sit there? What are you going to do with that?
150
Bob Kopp @bobkopp.net · 14h
Like, why? Is there a need for a CMU campus in Miami? And if the campus is supposed to be built on the real estate, where is the capital and operating budget for this entirely new campus coming from?

Good questions.
1. Under what authority is Dr. Matthew Wielicki serving in relation to the USGCRP?
a. By what process was Dr. Wielicki appointed?
b. Please provide copies of the following:
i. Documentation of the Chair's selection;
ii. Documentation of Committee discussions and approval of Dr. Wielicki's appointment; and
ili. A copy of Dr. Wielicki's current SF-50
Notification of Personnel Action.
2. What role did OSTP play in the appointment of Dr. Wielicki to the USGCRP?
3. What role, if any, did the White House, independent of OSTP, play in the appointment of Dr. Wielicki to the USGCRP?
4. What role, if any, did OMB and/or its Director, Russell Vought, play in the appointment of Dr. Wielicki to the USGCRP?5. In July 2025, USGCRP's website, globalclimate.goV B, was taken down and remains unavailable.
a. Please provide a list of current USGCRP Committee members and documentation of USGCRP Committee meetings held since
May 1st, 2026.
b. What is the current staff level of the USGCRP office, including civil servants, political appointees, contractors, and agency detailees?
6. Does USGCRP intend to publish the sixth NCA?
a. If yes, what process does USGCRP and any involved external parties intend to tollow to draft, review, and disseminate the report? Please provide detailed guidance as it is available.
b. If yes, what criteria and process will USGCRP and any involved external parties use to determine whether specific pieces of data, studies, and other forms of scientific or technical evidence qualify as meeting the conditions of "Gold Standard Science"?c. If yes, when does USGCRP intend to issue the final version of its report?
7. Who made the decision to dismiss the hundreds of authors for the sixth NCA in 2025? Did OSTP participate in that decision?
8. Who directed NASA to issue stop-work orders and/or terminate the contracts
relating to the management of the USGCRP?
Did OSTP participate in that decision?
9. Did Department of Government
Efficiency (DOGE) representatives have any involvement in the stop-work orders or termination of the USGCRP support contracts or the dismissal of the authors of the sixth NCA?

Yes--we found an increase in the intensity of the strongest storms (but not in the average intensity) using ERA obs and peak sustained winds. My graduate student Kenzie Weaver has examined this in more detail (comparing multiple datasets, metrics, etc) in a paper that is currently in revision.

Also from the STAP report:

STAP Assessment Statement on ETCs: In summary, there is very high confidence that the precipitation
rate of nor’easters is increasing, but limited evidence for long-term trends in ETC frequency, intensity,
and trajectory.
030
Bob Kopp @bobkopp.net · 26/09/2026
Here’s the punchline on nor’easters (called ETCs, extratropical cyclones, in the quote) from the 2025 NJ Science & Technical Advisory Panel assessment
Regarding ETCs, future projections of ETCs show increases in precipitation (Seneviratne et al., 2021). In
addition, some studies suggest northward and eastward shifts in tracks of ETCs (Seneviratne et al., 2021;
Zappa et al., 2013). Frequency and intensity changes under future climate scenarios are ambiguous due to
low model resolution and the wide breadth of study areas (Priestley & Catto, 2022). However, a recent
study of the impacts of climate change on the intensity of explosive cyclones (a rapid deepening and
intensification of ETCs) in the North Atlantic has found warming scenarios will create more intense
atmospheric rivers that are also associated with explosive cyclones deepening earlier and for longer
periods of time: this is expected to result in potentially more hazardous future storms (Lopez-Marti et al.,
2025). In addition, so-called “pseudo-global warming” experiments, in which the effects of climate change
are simulated by imposing large-scale changes in environmental conditions (e.g., sea surface
temperatures, vertical temperature profiles), indicate enhanced ETC activity over the North Atlantic and
offshore of the US east coast (Michaelis et al., 2017). In another pseudo-global warming study, Willison et
al. (2015) found that horizontal resolution greater than what is used in most current climate models
results in an amplified storm track response.

Whether the wind intensity or tracks of nor’easters have changed is less well established, though recent work by @michaelemann.bsky.social’s group at Penn provides some evidence for a historical increase in wind speed

Eyeballing NOAA data, it looks to me like the highest water level yet reached at the Atlantic City gauge is about a 1-in-2 year event (about 50% chance per year), about 5 times more likely due to sea level rise than it would have been 60 years ago

The literature about changes in nor’easters due to climate change is clear about two things: 1) more intense precipitation due to a warmer atmosphere, and 2) more extensive coastal flooding due to higher sea levels

Apparently some Siri web searches go to an anonymized, privacy-filtered version of Gemini on Private Cloud Compute, so it’s not all on device as I thought - but why would I ever then use Google?

Would be funny if 1) Google search becoming nearly unusable without a LLM interface and 2) people realizing their phone’s language model can basically replace Google search AI without compromising privacy catalyzed the popping of the bubble
