It's probably good rhetoric and even rooted in a lot of truth but I don't love that "trans people are bad at sports anyway" is sort of becoming the singular refrain of the trans-inclusive position lately

Did Amelie in class this week, Fallen Angels next week. Watching Angels now. We need a complete shutdown of global film production until they figure out how to put the green back in movies. God these movies are so green and beautiful

ebert on cage: still true

There are often lists of the great living male movie stars: De Niro, Nicholson and Pacino, usually. How often do you see the name of Nicolas Cage? He should always be up there. He's daring and fearless in his choice of roles, and unafraid to crawl out on a limb, saw it off and remain suspended in air. No one else can project inner trembling so effectively. Recall the opening scenes in "Leaving Las Vegas." See him in Scorsese's "Bringing Out the Dead." Think of the title character in "The Weather Man." Watch him melting down in "Adaptation." And then remember that he can also do a parachuting Elvis impersonator ("Honeymoon in Vegas"), a wild rock 'n' roller ("Wild at Heart"), a lovesick one-handed baker ("Moonstruck"), a straight-arrow Secret Service agent ("Guarding Tess") and on and on.
He always seems so earnest. However improbable his character, he never winks at the audience. He is committed to the character with every atom and plays him as if he were him. His success in making Charlie Kaufman a neurotic mess and Donald Kaufman a carefree success story, in the same movie, comes largely from this gift. There are slight cosmetic differences between the two: Charlie usually needs a shave, Donald has a little more hair. But the real reason we can tell the twins apart, even when they're in the same trick shot, comes from within: Cage can tell them apart. He is always Charlie when he plays Charlie, always Donald when he plays Donald. Look and see.

I love the "The Gambler" lyric that goes "if you're gonna play the game, boy, you got to learn to play it right" because it always kinda sounds to me like he's singing about a GameBoy

Before one of the many world cup games I watched this summer I remember hearing a manager had ended his pregame talk saying "go out there and do whatever you did when you were a kid and you fell in love with the game." Does anybody remember which manager?

Harper @bobbya.bsky.social · 14/09/2026

I said it last game but now I'll post it - in this form the Union can make a real run on the cup

Another first half red for a Union opponent and we'll take those but they have all struck me as harsh

Not to be corny beyond belief but this weekend I'm playing serious + sanctioned club frisbee for the first time really in four years and every time I put on the jersey I think of De Niro at the end of Midnight Run putting on the wire and saying he feels like a cop again

It's not like we need a 97th minute penalty to make this 3-0 but by the standard penso has set that was easily a penalty

Harper @bobbya.bsky.social · 06/09/2026

The chipped pass from Bueno to Wagner after the step to pull the defense the other way was so so lovely

Lmao Owusu needed to get in the video room that's exactly what Blake has done on the last two penalties he's faced

It's the kind of penalty call the Union never get I'll tell you that

100

Harper @bobbya.bsky.social · 06/09/2026

Very funny to then score on the absolute scuffle of a set piece where I'm not sure even one touch on the ball came off as intended

000

Harper @bobbya.bsky.social · 06/09/2026

The set piece routines from the union have been awesome tonight. Two great looks at goal, too bad they couldn't put either away

000

Harper @bobbya.bsky.social · 06/09/2026

Hope Bruno Damiani can break out of the yips sometime soon. Poor guy does everything he's supposed to - works hard, makes the right pass, sets up his strike partner, takes a hell of a beating in holdup - but it just crumbles when he has to shoot. Not a player without skill to play the ball, but

A tweet from @heiscomeheisme reading: IN 1976 A MAN WAS SHOT DEAD IN BELFAST BY A MINOR REPUBLICAN PARAMILITARY THAT CLAIMED RESPONSIBILITY FOR ONLY ONE OTHER ATTACK ... I don't know man do Victor Wembanyama or Brittney Griner have to post studies showing that being tall doesn't make you better at basketball do they have to pretend there's a reasonable discussion about their right to play a sport or do they just get to be proud of their abilities, innate and earned

California. Perhaps you’ve heard of it? It is the edge of the continent, it is the apocalypse state, and it is the subject of many songs by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, though fewer than you might think...
