“For four decades, the United States has run one of the most profitable trades in the world economy… import young people that the global labor market has underpriced—graduate students whose ability outruns their résumés—give them a place to prove themselves, and keep much of the upside”

Speech that is “annoying, long-winded, aggressive, hyperbolic, and grandiose” is free speech nonetheless, a judge wrote after Lane Community College banned the student.

Yet another day where I have to sign a form, which the university has made fully digital. But they do not provide Adobe subscriptions so the PDF is not signable and also refuse to put the official forms onto Docusign The total work hours across everyone at the university must cost in the $millions

Once again, I gotta say: you cannot treat anything you’re feeding into an AI as anonymous. There are enormous ethics implications for, e.g. referees who are clearly uploading others’ unpublished papers without consent, let alone health care professionals or law enforcement

The decline in nursing home beds in the US is an incredibly concerning trend, because recent research suggests that the supply of possible informal caregivers is declining as the share of older adults (65+) is increasing

Just in case bean counters tell you "the expectations are much higher now in terms of how many papers you should have when you go up for full," well...we can of course check on that. (Keeping in mind that bean counting is not a great method)

I have watched my university spend upward of probably $200 million on our 2 building renovations and this morning I had to detour 15 min walk due to closed entrance, then toilet seat fell off, only 1 of 3 sinks had water, escalator to 4th floor is broken, and now no A/C in the room I’m meeting in.

Lots of things going around about that social class and PhD paper. Sure, results are pretty obvious. But the real lesson, to me, is that departments should be providing the support (both financially and instructionally) for students to explore the social and cultural parts of work that matter.

Research units from across government have been gutted. More than 10,000 PhDs have left government. For example the research arm of the Department of Education lost 90% of their staff and the research office for the Secretary of Health and Human Services lost an estimated 60% of their staff.

In 2008, there were 10 position players with 7+ fWAR. This year, there is only 1 (PCA). Is there a trend in the concentration of talent (i.e. tighter distribution) with development? Play time innovations? Or maybe just an anomaly this year?

Here is a bunch of lies Ted Cruz told on College Game Day and my efforts to providing the true answers via a brief fisking. I'll answer each one in text below as well. Short version: When you have to pile this many false statements in one paragraph to sell something, the something ain't good.
"Most college athletic programs are losing tens of millions of dollars, and as a result, they're canceling women's programs and non-revenue sports and Olympic sports. ... What we have right now is chaos, there are no rules, and the situation with the transfer portal, where kids transfer two, three, four, five times—it's terrible for the game, it's terrible for the players, it's terrible for the schools, it's terrible for the families. ... If we don't act, in three to five years we're going to see 40 to 50 schools that have competitive football programs and everyone else goes under. That would be a tragedy."

Leaving aside Ohtani (b/c now injured), ZiPS is projecting Pete Crow-Armstrong to be the *only* 7+ fWAR player this year (10.3 fWAR). During my lifetime, there has *never* been a (non-COVID) season with fewer than two 7+ fWAR players. This is an enormous and historic MVP lead.

I continue to be amazed by the fact that the only 300 HR / 400 SB players in the history of MLB are Barry and Bobby Bonds. Jose Ramirez might get there. Altuve almost certainly will not. Trea Turner also very unlikely. Acuna seems like the only one somewhat likely. Long way to go for Witt/Elly/PCA

Yordan Alvarez had his SLG drop below .600 over the weekend. The last season there were no .600 SLG was at the trough of run scoring in 2014. There has been no other season since the end of the 1994-95 work stoppage where the MLB SLG leader was below .600.
