Falling

One yellowing, heart-shaped leaf cannot hold on to the aspen any longer. Green protruding veins still reminisce about Summer. A decorous deception. Nobody can vanquish death.

I observe the aspen heart dance through the air past a few last sunflowers that are reflecting golden hues. Then, it veers towards rugose hydrangea. Perhaps it admires how beautifully they are ageing.

It does not make a difference, I think, as a sequel to memories unravels feelings I hoped had long gone. Now they are towering over me like monuments of shame and regret.

I know they are not mine. It was just convenient to park them in my nervous system. That one, that feels too much and bothersome to others. It seems people can never make up their minds.

Your rasping breath mixes with the aspen's susurration. The effects of the cough syrup must be wearing off. I shake the empty bottle and set it aside.

The dancing heart of gold sails on as I walk into the kitchen to fetch our steak knife. One clean cut takes care of it.

The aspen heart lands the instant the first drop of blood hits the floor.

Text:

Before

Before a petal falls,
   before a flower fades,
      life bursts in splendour

Before a raindrop falls,
   before a cloud dissipates,
      dark skies hold promise

Before a night falls,
   before a day ends,
      memories are forged

Before a heart falls,
   before a pledge is given,
      oneself was enough
