All the dopes in the "Geez I dunno if Trump should be impeached" chattering coward class should maybe consider the idea of allowing a sitting President to act like this, over and over, with no repercussions.

One of the side effects of which is that I'd expect QA and Ops to start coming back as distinct specialties with distinct roles over the next few years Assuming of course civilization doesn't collapse first, or whatever Interesting times we live in, eh?

Meaning "professional" users will end up adopting "loosely structured natural language" prompts, aka "dialects" and special purpose models, rather than the free form usage that seems prevalent today (To be clear, I'm not talking about LLM use in other domains, or about GenAI use more broadly)

My go to until a couple of conversations I had recently was the "painfully stupid but also incredibly productive (for better or worse) employee" analogy Now I increasingly suspect that after the dust settles the role of LLMs in software will be more like the role of compilers in the early days

Very darkly funny that the entire neoliberal sales pitch was that competition yields better results than regulation, and then they removed all the competition *and* all the regulation and most of y'all still didn't even *start* paying attention until the "trickle down" part finally started drying up

Oh well, who knows... "It Might Work For Us!" "Maybe This Time Will Be Different!" This is the kind of leadership you end up with when you spend decades promoting people based on their ability to soothe donors and perform loyalty instead of their ability to strategize, or *inspire* loyalty

Really love knowing that the people officially in charge of impeding authoritarian consolidation not only don't bother to plan for stuff like this, but don't even think it's *necessary* to plan, because that would be too much like admitting all the stale "checks and balances" rhetoric is meaningless

Come to think of it though, wasn't this one of Schumer's "red lines" at some point? It doesn't even seem worth going back to check anymore. That's how completely detached from political reality the "opposition" leadership are. It'd be as pointless as trying to attack Republicans for hypocrisy.

Which, let's face it, is going to happen eventually anyway It's just a question of whether they're removed under duress by smarter fascists or replaced by a new coalition within the Democratic electorate The latter option being *your* job as a voter, as all the moderates like to keep reminding you

Latest comic: Machine out of control
Out of control

Woman drinking beer: It feels like there’s a weird robotic machine spinning out of control and no person or government is capable of fixing it.

It’s taking over everything, eating up precious land and water and spewing pollution like a rogue agent hell-bent on destruction.

If things keep going like this, there will be no humans left!

Woman 2: Yeah, the AI threat is pretty scary.

Woman 1: AI? I’m talking about our insane shareholder-first economy.

TV news announcer in background: stocks up again on deregulation… more drilling… next: record heat on the West Coast!

Worth adding that the incentive for people in marginalized communities is to either be *hyper* competent so they can participate in the core economy, or completely refuse to participate in it Not that that happens in the Land of the Free. But it does happen in some of the shithole countries.

Most people are incentivized towards competence as a means of improving their material conditions, but the wealthy aren't. Their incentives are entirely emotional: status preservation, positional dominance, alleviating boredom, etc. It's no surprise they typically regress into spoiled children.

I'm already spending "thousands of dollars" for a new shirt if you take the externalities into account. I'm just paying it in taxes instead of all of it going to the people who make the shirts. If you don't think that matters you don't think it matters. But that's how it works.

No, the modern equivalent would be more like opposition to data centers, or fighting for universal healthcare or public banking They were protecting their own livelihoods, absolutely. They were not doing it to prevent material progress. There is a difference, and that difference matters.

The Luddites were not anti-technology and the only reason anyone thinks they were is that what they opposed was wage slavery Which is a position that has to be propagandized to be something else Listening to the Luddites would have saved a lot of lives and a lot of grief over the following century

And yes, it does go the other way sometimes People rarely aim for systems of "bureaucratic cruelty" deliberately, but when they do they may find their goals subverted by gatekeepers who disapprove of the cruelty and use the process to undermine it "Schindler's Ark" came up in conversation recently
100
Fancy Peyote, Speaker Emerita @blooshky.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
YMMV of course But my advice is to make sure you can keep both of these perspectives – "due process" and "bureaucratic cruelty" – in your head at the same time, because both views are indisputably legitimate. You cannot have one without at least the *possibility* that it suddenly becomes the other.
100
Fancy Peyote, Speaker Emerita @blooshky.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
Gates and Gatekeepers are sometimes called Checks and Balances "Just one more check and balance, baby, I swear, this time there will be no more harm, this time will be different, we just need to..." But eventually you end up with Qualified Immunity for the President of the United States of America
100
Fancy Peyote, Speaker Emerita @blooshky.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
So the more kinds of harms you try to solve at once, the more you end up relying on gates. And when you have gates you need gatekeepers, because sometimes a decision about who gets to pass through the gate does not have an obvious answer It sucks, but that's just the way things are Morality != Law
100
Fancy Peyote, Speaker Emerita @blooshky.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
The reason this is so important is that the more globally you try to solve harm, the more you have to reach for procedural complexity Only the problem with that is that "procedural complexity" is just a fancy way to say "gates" and/or "gatekeepers" Authority. Bureaucracy. Delay. Bribes. Cheating.
100
Fancy Peyote, Speaker Emerita @blooshky.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
So whenever you, as an individual, want to minimize some harm, whether toward you or caused by you or caused by others toward others, it's critical to think carefully up front about *exactly* what harm you're trying to prevent or repair Because trying to solve harm *globally* is actually dangerous!
100
Fancy Peyote, Speaker Emerita @blooshky.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
When you dig deeply enough into harm reduction, you always end up, eventually, somehow, at "but that's just the way things are" Because it's true. You will always end up there because there is no perfect solution and there never will be. There is only that Eternal Vigilance the ancients talk about

My latest @newscientist.com cartoon
Panel 1: a large robot (composed of AI servers, network switches, storage arrays, and power distribution units) and a human are talking.

Professor "You don't want to destroy humanity do you, lLLM-A-9300x?"

Robot "Haha. What a silly question, Professor. I have no desires or feelings of my own whatsoever."

Professor (relieved)"Oh good."

Panel 2: they walk on. The robot continues "I am merely a tool of the company that created me. And that company, being composed of humans, will naturally have humanity's best interests at heart."

Panel 3: The professor is conspicuously quiet.
"Right?" says the Robot.
…
More silence

"Professor?"
