I think 80% (and probably higher) of U.S. Navy *officers* will never have even heard of the Russo-Japanese war unless they go to the Naval War College (or a similar PME institution with it in the curriculum).

Don't need to worry about anything that's past the eighth-grade curriculum, as it turns out. College level texts on the Halting Problem? Not a problem at all!

Kinda opposite for me, I dabble in AI for personal stuff but it's been a tremendous force-multiplier for what I do at work today.

Well, part of your merits is your ability to work on the team you're being hired into in the company. I say this as someone naturally standoffish, it's something I have to tone down at work, I can't work as well with my team if I scare them off with RBF.

I almost hate to say it but this is amazing. Getting closer to having to figure out if I'm going to welcome our robot overlords...

OK, I didn't say that either though. It's hard enough to communicate effectively in this format, even without words being dismissively put in my mouth. Others smarter than me will have to explain it better, have a good weekend.

Sorry, I thought you were genuinely inquiring and hadn't already decided what the right answer should be. Had I known I wouldn't have wasted either of our time.

When mathematician Leonhard Euler read papers of Leibniz, he learned about calculus. When Euler then went on to make his own mathematical discoveries, it was informed by his prior readings, but wasn't simply a regurgitation of what he'd read from Leibniz and others. LLMs can do the same thing.

Metroid wasn't always twitch gameplay. Super Metroid had a sort of dynamic difficulty to it because exploring more to find upgrades actually did make the bosses easier. That went away with Dread, whose actual difficulty levels are basically all the same, it's nothing but git gud there.

Can't say I'm shocked. "They don't want power; they want to *critique* power." There's always another justification to put The Bad Guys in charge, so you can complain about how awful they are.

Either way consumers don't directly touch most of the economy, but they still deal with the impact of prices in the supply chain (such as with the price of diesel increasing food costs today), that's hardly new or unique to AI.
000
Michael Pyne @blindmansbinary.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
Given that price is so much higher than cost, in both consumer and AI spaces we should expect capacity to be built to increase supply, bringing prices down closer to cost. That's the point I made in my post, about prices normalizing as the supply/demand mismatch goes away.
100
Michael Pyne @blindmansbinary.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
If this were the case, GPUs, memory and storage would be dirt cheap. But it's not the case, because supply for consumer hardware is being reallocated to AI as it brings higher profits for now, so supply and demand are now imbalanced, even in the consumer markets, leading to rising prices.
100
Michael Pyne @blindmansbinary.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
Some part of that is the mismatch between supply/demand, which is not an inherent problem. If AI-based demand sustains enough for supply to catch up, will people still hate AI onces costs normalize? Will be interesting to see, but I doubt it personally.

Dealers typically do get incentives from the manufactuer. I'd assume no financing-related incentive on a 0% financing deal but hey, business world is weird. But there'd still be the other non-financing-related incentives that would apply for making the sale in the first place.

Michael Pyne @blindmansbinary.bsky.social · 29/08/2026
Through the price on the car itself, along with any residual later services they assume you'll get at the same dealership. But if you're a "well-qualified buyer" you have financing options by definition. You're not where the money is being made and, weren't going to be, which is why 0% is an offer.

Michael Pyne @blindmansbinary.bsky.social · 29/08/2026
Most cars I've bought have been financed through the dealer, because they legitimately had a better rate than my very good credit union. They probably still made more money that way than on the car itself though!

The thing my grandma said all the time was “use it up, wear it out! make it do, or do without!”. She and grandpa *both* worked, were lucky to be able to supplement that with farming on the side, and they were still never close to rich.

Michael Pyne @blindmansbinary.bsky.social · 29/08/2026
If you think there's no distinction, try buying a new car cash-only, and watch the dealer go apoplectic trying to get you to finance it anyways. The point is that the financing is where the profit happens, the new car is their excuse to get to the loan, not the other way around.

Streetsblog's logic reminds me of the early days of aviation, when safety gear was thought to be bad to install, lest the pilot get the idea they could just bail in a parachute rather than try to land the plane. And it's just as silly, cyclists wearing helmets won't be the thing stopping bike lanes.

I've even had fully local LLMs manage to give substantive, actionable feedback on stuff I've written. Not something to just uncritically let loose but it should absolutely help make your software better, especially with modern models.

Are there any tools which have literally created zero verifiable problems for their users? Being able to say that “this tool has solved these specific problems for me” says something much more meaningful. Yes, we all laughed at the r’s in strawberries but those tools really did get better since.

Half of the entire Navy is younger than something like 25-27 years old, depending on recruiting/retention trends. Even younger in the Marines!

Each state has a req't to establish residency. The thing that trips people up on SLR is that you can't have your cake and eat it too. If you go from Fla. to Cali and vote in CA, have a CA DL, register your car in CA, it's fair to assume you've changed SLR to CA, even for state taxes.

Yeah I had a chat client that would do that with my IRC password. I'd type a password like “hunter2”, it would show up to the rest of chat as “*******”, it was great. Would be a great feature for Bluesky!

I didn't need any loophole. I was a Florida resident when I joined, and a Florida resident I remained throughout until my military service concluded. Yes, you'd want to listen to expert advice, but it's not a rare topic in the military, the SLR even shows up on each month's pay.

Michael Pyne @blindmansbinary.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
No, it's completely legal for military servicemembers. I was a "Florida resident" for my 20+ military career even though I was only in Florida for military duty my first ~2 years. www.americanbar.org/groups/legal...

Different rules apply to military servicemembers and spouses, who are deployed where the military orders them to go. I joined the Navy out of Florida so I didn't feel bad about my Florida plate, but it's definitely a tax advantage. And yes, I voted as a Florida resident the whole time too.

I'm kinda surprised you're surprised ;), these are the same devs who would want everything they're supposed to do nicely wrapped up in a Jira ticket, with the approach written up by a sys. arch., the change needed by a BA, so all they have to do is type. These devs predated SO even.

And it would certainly have helped decades ago when the activism was most disastrous, as it would have forestalled a great deal of the carbon release between then and now. We live in a world where even Ireland sees wildfires and it's because of stuff like this.

For a long time straight white men were actually the largest population of SAPR reports. Even now they're a notable chunk (something like 20-25% of all reports) and who knows where a high-T force takes that. So even going back to the ‘50s wouldn't solve SAPR.

One of my happiest accomplishments was to get that whole chain of thought shut down promptly when my wife first encountered it a few years after our son's autism diagnosis. It is evil to prey on the grief people can feel about their children!

This impending crisis has been worrying military recruiters for years already. And the military tends to get more technical over time rather than less and that makes it even harder to attract enough of each new (& smaller) year of high school grads to enlist.

I suppose, though it can be made harder. But if that were an actual problem there'd be no users of git, let alone actual mutable databases like PostgreSQL and SQLite. I just checked github.com/bitcoin/bitc... and they still don't even sign their commits so apparently they agree with me.
