But, women have historically been discouraged from both. Thus, many adult female athletes thus far have been playing a kind of catch-up game. So, as we are moving and shaking in the 21st century, it would be incredibly interesting to see a generation of athletes not immediately hampered by sexism.

True. Regardless of sex, maintaining physical conditioning through puberty is key as it affects the mature physique & its capabilities. It's also likely easier for an athlete to learn to accommodate the nuances of their body younger than as an adult, as with many things.
