I suppose one thing with dreadful AI stuff in the old game scene is anyone who you thought was a good sort despises it. It’s been nice to see people standing up against it. I’m a bit of an irrelevance so I can say whatever I like, but it’s nice that people with impact are saying it.

There’s more newly-created games being released, fan translations coming out, arcade games being emulated than you probably could ever play in your life time - all ones not using AI. There’s absolutely no reason to get involved with this AI shit. It’s like drinking from a puddle when you have a tap.

Great article. My thoughts about generative AI game projects and translations are that they should be completely ignored, but also that people failing to disclose they’ve used it should be shunned. If nothing else it makes me want to champion the great work people are doing outside of the AI junk.

I think ultimately this should be the policy at this stage, if somebody sticks up an AI translation/hack simply don’t mention it. It does mean honest people will have to usually explain how they did it, but I’ve rarely seen a real hacker who wasn’t proud to show you how they figured it all out.

The AI translation shitstorm makes me nostalgic for the days where I’d buy a Japanese game and have absolutely zero idea if I’d be able to extract gameplay from it by sheer trial-and-error. It was fun when it was a new game and there’d be a dozen of us on GameFAQs trying to figure it out as we went.

Update: I found this same machine working today but with a credit in it! Unfortunately the steering was out of whack and violently pulling right, so it was like driving a car that very badly needs the tracking doing. Slightly broken OutRun 2 is still better than many games though.

Here’s a great tip for how to get the most out of your sealed games and game grading. Firstly, check the quality of the seal by fully opening it. Secondly, grade the game by playing it and saying if it was good or not.

I haven’t figured out whether it’s a video or an article yet, but I’m writing an article about the merits of enjoying “bad” games and that sometimes the fun isn’t extracted from the actual gameplay but the overall experience, even if that includes imagining them turning it into the publisher.

Beast Warriors/Wrestler, an interesting concept that was incompetently handled and feels strangely cursed

Virtual Hydlide, an oddly compelling game that isn’t necessarily bad but just rejects almost every established RPG system and makes the game feel unsettling and isolating throughout

Fist, a fighting game so comically bad in almost every respect that it is not only funny to play but you can feel the absolute desperation in making it and feel empathy towards the developer

The James Pond AI thing is interesting, not helped by that Amiga mascot platformers usually had a certain “look” to the character art with dead-looking glassy eyes and smooth colour gradients. You could always tell an Amiga to console platformer port just by what the main character looked like.
