I think some people do things like this just because they get a thrill out of creeping people out who aren’t really in a position to do anything about it.

Just a warning for everyone, since Video Game Slopterica keeps being the most irresponsible YouTube Channel to exist these days. The Banjo-Tooie Recompilation is NOT associated with us. It is entirely AI-generated. Both Zelda: Recompiled and Banjo: Recompiled have very clear No AI stances.

I’m (just!) old enough to remember but there was a 2-year period starting about 1990 where Nintendo rapidly went from weird thing only seen in American films and the Argos catalogue to having kiosks all over and every other family seeming to have a Gameboy. They were very late, but made a huge push.

I mean it’s true, but liking the Master System was about the only thing we got right. It’s why they kept Cex open on the Queen’s funeral.

Official Game Gear appreciation post, because I still appreciate it to the point that I keep it on my desk. Used to play it in the car during Covid when the shops were shut.

Saw a page saying they wouldn’t recommend playing Master System games on a Game Gear due to the resolution scaling, then I played it anyway. Don’t tell me what to do!

Put it in Smoochem and wait for someone to note there’s a weird stretched texture, then bust this out with “actually”. High-level cyberbullying.

I suppose one thing with dreadful AI stuff in the old game scene is anyone who you thought was a good sort despises it. It’s been nice to see people standing up against it. I’m a bit of an irrelevance so I can say whatever I like, but it’s nice that people with impact are saying it.

There’s more newly-created games being released, fan translations coming out, arcade games being emulated than you probably could ever play in your life time - all ones not using AI. There’s absolutely no reason to get involved with this AI shit. It’s like drinking from a puddle when you have a tap.

The attitude of simply playing everything available to you, regardless of how it was produced or whether it’s even accurate to the real experience, is driving us up the fucking wall. Mindless, uncritical consumption is how we get Palmer Luckey releasing Game Boys built with murder drone parts.

Always felt it had too much focus on bigging up industry dweebs as creative geniuses, but often clueless when it came to actual game reviews (which weren’t attributed to any name, as if it was their hive mind opinion - which is really dumb for something where it’s utterly subjective).

Pipe Mania 3D (PS1): Thought I’d end it on this. It’s just a simple pipe puzzle game, elevated by an excellent soundtrack and charming presentation. I like the way the Pipe guy goes “ouurgh” when pipes leak and then “yyyeah” when fixed. And the end of level score sounding like a touch tone phone.

Gran Turismo (PS1): The original and best, love this game. I particularly enjoy how Japanese-specific the car lineup is and it was one reason why I liked the P10 Primera enough I bought one for real (it’s one of the starter used cars in this). I wish the series would go back to more “normal” cars.

Clockwork Knight (Saturn): This 2.5D platformer is regarded as a bit throwaway for some reason. Fair to say it’s quite easy. But the whole package amazed me back in the day and I still love it, especially the ending music. You can tell a game where the people creating it really cared about it.

Money Idol Exchanger (MVS): I enjoy a block puzzle game despite mediocre skips at them. A lot of them I struggle with due to some colourblindness (some are fine though - depends what they’ve used). This one uses coins, so I got really into it. I’ve never, ever, completed it though (I have tried).

Thrill Drive (arcade): Obsessed with this since I first played it, racing through traffic with terrifying horror music and crashes resulting in screams and ambulance sirens. Never been well-emulated so I’m constantly dreaming that day will come. The atmosphere of it is amazing. It’s just so weird.

Bonanza Bros (MD): I know the MD one isn’t the “best” version (lacks the bonus round), but me and my old friend used to play this relentlessly on co-op. We even went to a fancy dress party as them (wasn’t hard). I know the game like the back of my hand, could do it on Hard without losing a life.

Shutokou Battle (DC): I love this series, but for me it originates with this particular game (I know there’s older ones). I had the PAL version and sank absolutely hundreds of hours into it, then got the Japan version where extra cars were unlocked off a VMU download on the official website. Mad!

Sim Tower (PC): I really wanted a PC in the mid-90s, I used to love looking at PC games but especially this for some reason. I used to love looking at the back and imagining what it’d be like. I didn’t get a workable PC until about 1998 and I had to mail order this, it was everything I’d hoped.

New Wheels John (ZX Spectrum): I had dealings with the used cars industry for some years and nothing really “got” the feeling of running a bombsite car pitch than this Basic-programmed game. Buy cars at auction and then desperately hope people buy them whilst your money drains away.

Any of the T&E Soft golf games on the Saturn, but especially The Hyper Golf: Devil’s Course (Valora Valley Golf) which is a surreal experience with special moves like teleporting balls and volcanoes, but presented completely straight-faced with the usual digitised golfers.

Probably the most frustrating part with the Saturn in particular, the community is hardly a closed shop. If anybody turned up and wanted to get involved with making homebrew or translations, I’m sure they’d be offered help and advice.

Great article. My thoughts about generative AI game projects and translations are that they should be completely ignored, but also that people failing to disclose they’ve used it should be shunned. If nothing else it makes me want to champion the great work people are doing outside of the AI junk.

Been after the Japan version for a while but it’s never quite the right price/condition combo. Did manage to get a sealed Rescue Shot though (don’t you worry, soon as my CRT is set back up the oblivious rabbit will be released from shrink wrap prison).

It’s easier to make sense of Sega by thinking of it as a company that lives to make bad business decisions, some of which result in amazing things (ridiculous arcade cabinets that will never make money, beloved but loss-making games) and also bad ones (cancelling/ignoring popular franchises).

I think ultimately this should be the policy at this stage, if somebody sticks up an AI translation/hack simply don’t mention it. It does mean honest people will have to usually explain how they did it, but I’ve rarely seen a real hacker who wasn’t proud to show you how they figured it all out.

My post about my dislike of AI translations went down well, but on a more positive note I think the very real translations happening are one of the reasons I think we’re living in a golden age of old games. Even disregarding the AI ones, there’s a great release every week or so!

BleedingCart @bleedingcart.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
Nowadays there’s some fantastic (non-AI) translations coming out, but if there’s no other option you might as well just try a game out and see how far you get. If you get really stuck, Google Translate via phone camera can help. Wouldn’t recommend it for games where the story is a big part though.

Something I figured out very quickly is that arcade ports usually have little (or even no) Japanese text, so I started buying the used Japanese Dreamcast versions of arcade games sold here for a third to half of the local release price.

BleedingCart @bleedingcart.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
A lot of games you could figure it out easy just by reflex reaction based on what games usually do and scraps of English. Something-or-other 4MB yes/no? It’ll be no file found, do you want to save one to a memory card? Story or main mode is almost always the top most on a menu, settings the bottom.

I remember a real highlight was when me and a few others were trying to figure out how to beat all the wanderers on Shutokou Battle 01 (PS2) using a Japanese online guide we translated using Babelfish so it only made about 30% sense (Subaru always translated as Seabass).

The AI translation shitstorm makes me nostalgic for the days where I’d buy a Japanese game and have absolutely zero idea if I’d be able to extract gameplay from it by sheer trial-and-error. It was fun when it was a new game and there’d be a dozen of us on GameFAQs trying to figure it out as we went.
