Official Game Gear appreciation post, because I still appreciate it to the point that I keep it on my desk. Used to play it in the car during Covid when the shops were shut.

Saw a page saying they wouldn’t recommend playing Master System games on a Game Gear due to the resolution scaling, then I played it anyway. Don’t tell me what to do!

Looking at old games for sale and encountered this, so now you have to as well.

Pipe Mania 3D (PS1): Thought I’d end it on this. It’s just a simple pipe puzzle game, elevated by an excellent soundtrack and charming presentation. I like the way the Pipe guy goes “ouurgh” when pipes leak and then “yyyeah” when fixed. And the end of level score sounding like a touch tone phone.

Gran Turismo (PS1): The original and best, love this game. I particularly enjoy how Japanese-specific the car lineup is and it was one reason why I liked the P10 Primera enough I bought one for real (it’s one of the starter used cars in this). I wish the series would go back to more “normal” cars.

Clockwork Knight (Saturn): This 2.5D platformer is regarded as a bit throwaway for some reason. Fair to say it’s quite easy. But the whole package amazed me back in the day and I still love it, especially the ending music. You can tell a game where the people creating it really cared about it.

Money Idol Exchanger (MVS): I enjoy a block puzzle game despite mediocre skips at them. A lot of them I struggle with due to some colourblindness (some are fine though - depends what they’ve used). This one uses coins, so I got really into it. I’ve never, ever, completed it though (I have tried).

Thrill Drive (arcade): Obsessed with this since I first played it, racing through traffic with terrifying horror music and crashes resulting in screams and ambulance sirens. Never been well-emulated so I’m constantly dreaming that day will come. The atmosphere of it is amazing. It’s just so weird.

Bonanza Bros (MD): I know the MD one isn’t the “best” version (lacks the bonus round), but me and my old friend used to play this relentlessly on co-op. We even went to a fancy dress party as them (wasn’t hard). I know the game like the back of my hand, could do it on Hard without losing a life.

Shutokou Battle (DC): I love this series, but for me it originates with this particular game (I know there’s older ones). I had the PAL version and sank absolutely hundreds of hours into it, then got the Japan version where extra cars were unlocked off a VMU download on the official website. Mad!

Sim Tower (PC): I really wanted a PC in the mid-90s, I used to love looking at PC games but especially this for some reason. I used to love looking at the back and imagining what it’d be like. I didn’t get a workable PC until about 1998 and I had to mail order this, it was everything I’d hoped.

New Wheels John (ZX Spectrum): I had dealings with the used cars industry for some years and nothing really “got” the feeling of running a bombsite car pitch than this Basic-programmed game. Buy cars at auction and then desperately hope people buy them whilst your money drains away.

Update: I found this same machine working today but with a credit in it! Unfortunately the steering was out of whack and violently pulling right, so it was like driving a car that very badly needs the tracking doing. Slightly broken OutRun 2 is still better than many games though.

Absolutely this, I love my collection of weird old games but also love taking my missus to Thailand for 3 weeks a year (where I then go look at weird old games). If a used game costs hundreds I’ll just buy something else. Life experiences are worth more than any wall of games.

I had this running on my shitty 6 year old phone in about 30 seconds (could be played in full screen and different control options etc but just for proof). It’s like waiting around to buy one of those Chinese Famicom clones they used to sell on the outdoor market.

Here’s a great tip for how to get the most out of your sealed games and game grading. Firstly, check the quality of the seal by fully opening it. Secondly, grade the game by playing it and saying if it was good or not.

During Covid when I couldn’t leave the UK, I went slightly insane and bought anything vaguely interesting in charity shops. Most of it I since sold, but here’s a third-party combo found in a box today. Both unused old stock I believe.

I haven’t figured out whether it’s a video or an article yet, but I’m writing an article about the merits of enjoying “bad” games and that sometimes the fun isn’t extracted from the actual gameplay but the overall experience, even if that includes imagining them turning it into the publisher.
Beast Warriors/Wrestler, an interesting concept that was incompetently handled and feels strangely cursed Virtual Hydlide, an oddly compelling game that isn’t necessarily bad but just rejects almost every established RPG system and makes the game feel unsettling and isolating throughoutFist, a fighting game so comically bad in almost every respect that it is not only funny to play but you can feel the absolute desperation in making it and feel empathy towards the developer

I’m a historic fan (and fierce critic) of Sega, but always liked them best when they did something overambitious that probably cost them money, like integrating VMU support into the F355 Challenge cabinet.

The number plate SR55EGA on the Sega Rally 3 machine isn’t registered but the format is technically compliant so in theory I could request the DVLA release it for sale and buy it. I don’t have any car new enough for it to go on, but I guess it would be something to do.

Talking of good games for once, I picked up Kuukiyomi: Consider It World - Thailand Ver. and it’s great! What a weird little series, going to pick up the rest. Little mini games where you try to be as considerate as possible, but equally importantly - there’s a mode where you can be a total dick!

Uncovered a random pile of promo/review stuff from when I used to actually review games. For some reason I didn’t actually review Metal Slug X, there was some issue with the PR company or something? I can’t remember. I had more but sometimes they’d give you full retail copies and I’d cash them in!

The funny thing about buying up cheap-but-mint games to use for replacement cases is you inevitably end up with a lot of ones that require obscure peripherals. This one actually sounds fairly interesting in a way.

Whilst this is the gaming equivalent of an archaeological dig nowadays, Hampstead on the ZX Spectrum was quite something in making the protagonist an unemployed naked guy in a smelly flat sat around watching 3-2-1 and the first story arc revolving around it being giro day.
