This week in bees: one of the hives has been (rightfully) pissed as hell after several disruptions to their world. They’re not playing about defending their hive, and partner got to mow in full PPE (for the first time) and 100 degree weather🫣😂😳🏃🐝🐝🐝🐝

One of my favorite things about living out in the middle of nowhere is that our neighbors are far enough away that they aren’t a problem launching fireworks with dogs and autistic kids. And they ‘re polite enough to mention that there’ll be launching big ones in the neighborhood chat.

There are very few things more soul-crushing than discovering you’ve left the painter’s tape on just a *bit* too long when the nice clean paint edge peels up along with the tape.

We have irises🥰🥰🥰🥰 It’s been a cool spring and I feel like I’m behind, even though I’m probably not really. Now i just need a Plant Daddy to buy me an 18-pack of mystery roses for $150..😇🤣🫥 Time to start with the flower pictures. As always, details in the alt text. 🌱❤️🌺

Men Are From Mars. A bearded iris with mustard standards and deep lilac falls with a chestnut border, and an old gold beard. Sweet fragrance. The color feels a bit out of season, it would SLAY the fall. But I love it more than I expected!

Nelly Tardivier. A tall bearded iris with lavender-violet standards and rose-copper falls and an orange beard. No fragrance. I love this one. It’s such a gorgeous compliment to spring pastels, and a nice transition to more saturated colors!

TIL that Killdeer hatchlings fledge and GTFO pretty much immediately. I was alarmed when I saw just one chick and one (probably dud) egg in their nest this afternoon. Both parents were aggressively playing possum nearby, so I Where’s Waldo-ed the other two chicks. 🐣🐦‍⬛🌱

How amazing would it be if our societal perspective around healthcare could shift from “What’s wrong with you and how can we avoid having to pay to fix it?” to “What do you need to be healthy and feel good in your body and how do we help you get there?” It’s not logistics, it’s perspective.

Fucking hell. No sleep for me because the cats were hunting a mouse through our room and caught the attention of the 60-lb dog who had to be physically restrained from attempting to join them. She sounds like a herd of elephants when she hunts mice. I guess at least everyone else gets to sleep?

Used the flame weeder to prep some rows today, and I gotta tell you, it’s particularly therapeutic right now. I’m sunburned (it’s the cloudy days that get you) but pretty satisfied and looking forward to the season.

It’s so windy here today that it knocked over the bees. I have to build a more sturdy stand ASAP I managed to get them up and they look pretty ok, I think they’ll recover. I managed it unscathed until I had to go back and put the lid on AGAIN along with a heavy rock, and got strong on the lip. .

My poor sad little overturned hive. All exposed to the wind and trying to stay warm inside their frames where is not exposed.

A few frames that fell out when in got the hive body up and back on the stand, which is less sturdy than I would like at this point. I had try reinforce it with some large rocks against the legs and I’ll get something built this weekend.

A you can see that the bed have been burst and producing even in the cold and wet winter, and they’re looking nice and healthy, not small or slow at all! So I’m hopeful that we’re going to manage to overwinter them. I got them going kind of late, so I was concerned.

The hive placed back on its slightly -worse-for-the-wear stand. Hopefully it stays up overnight for me because I’m not sure the bees will let me rescue them again. They’re PISSED!!

After it all, they got me right on the lip as I was trying to retreat, having deposited the cap and a heavy stones to weight it down again.

I’m glad they’re being protective, but dang…I know better than to handle angry bees without protective gear. Definitely a FAFO moment.

On the other had, we both think I look HILARIOUS, like I’ve had work done that would be a million times out of character for me. But it’s kinda fun to see what I’d look like if I got too excited about lip fillers 😂😂😂

Not knocking surgical improvements, if that’s your vibe, it’s just not in any way for me.

A Witch’s Guide to Magical Innkeeping by Sangu Mandanna is such a gem! Her writing is evocative and rich, and I found myself sobbing as I read/listened (the audio version is excellent) because her description of the ghosts in the inn closely paralleled what EMDR Therapy felt like to me. LOVED IT!

Our well pump gave up the ghost last a Monday and I’ve been switching our system to a submersible. I’m comfortable with interior plumbing, but wells are a whole new world. But the good news is, it’s looking like my hive has survived the worst of winter! Also, I successfully replaced the pump🙌🙌🐝🌊🚜

I had to replace thermostat in the truck, and ran out of daylight yesterday when it was 40F. So of course it was freaking SNOWING and the temperature dropped while I was wrestling with that one awkward screw that always wrecks my time frame. And my fingers froze, so that was great. Done, though!

I adore all animals. But there’s something really flattering about a cat who likes you, and only you. I am, it seems, Rick’s Person. He’s the orangest cat on the planet, and he’ll occasionally come out to meet visitors. He’s super friendly and only bites in play. But he only has eyes for me.

Criminality is so rampant inside CBP that it has seen one of its own agents or officers arrested every 24 to 36 hours since 2005.
CBP's misconduct scandal is so long-running that today it would be old enough to drink.
In total, according to CBP's own discipline reports, over the 20 years from 2005 to 2024 - the last year numbers are available
- at least 4,913 CBP officers and Border Patrol agents have been arrested themselves, some multiple times. (In 2018 alone, a single CBP employee was arrested five times.) To put that number in perspective:
• The population of CBP agents and officers who have been arrested would make it roughly the nation's fourth largest police department - equal to the size of the entire Philadelphia police.
