25 years ago today, the U.S. launched its war in Afghanistan. Weeks earlier, Barbara Lee was the only member of Congress to vote against the 2001 Authorization of Military Force, warning it would be a blank check for forever wars. History has proven her lonely and courageous vote right.

People who continue to pursue a technology under these circumstances are either massive liars or truly believe this and are persisting anyway, and either way they are rotten people who should be removed from all forms of power and access.

In the 25 years since 9/11, the United States has spent $8 trillion+ on wars that have taken millions of lives in the name of fighting "terror." Can you imagine if we had instead invested those funds here on climate, health care, housing, and education?

Protest that endures, I think, is moved by a hope far more modest than that of public success: namely, the hope of preserving qualities in one's own heart and spirit that would be destroyed by acquiescence. Wendell Berry, What Are People For?

What the bad sci-fi I picked up as a kid taught me is a variation on "it is easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism": it is easier to imagine colonies on Mars than the end of white heteropatriarchy. Unless you're Ursula K. LeGuin, but she was good sci-fi.

Hello. The moment you gate educational videos behind a paywall, a massive wall of bureaucracy goes up. Teachers have to beg administrators for budgets, companies have to wine-and-dine school boards, millions of students get locked out, and people get forced into using material they don't like.

I see this so often that I think it might qualify as a law: The time people take to notice demographic trends is equal to the time required for the results to materialise. In other words, however obvious the maths might be, we cannot or will not see it coming.
