Lately I’ve been sitting with the fact that IL doesn’t have paid parental leave …which is deeply unaligned with IL politicians’ claims & broader work in maternal health / family support. Wondering where (whether) the political will & support for such policy exists…?

It could not be more obvious that the president does not care about US service members and in fact regards their deaths as mere political inconveniences. He has more sympathy for Putin than Americans who died because he decided to wage illegal war. Just listen to him.

"Emergency" rule means 1000s of Floridians will lose access HIV/AIDS medications March 1. Ladapo said the move was needed to fill a budget shortfall made worse by expiring premium tax credits. No other state has made such a drastic change. #IDsky #publichealth #LGBTQ #Florida #politics

Simmons' campaign with a comment about this incident, which occurred on Friday in Buena Park:
Canvassing While Black: Mike Simmons Has Police Called On Him by a Constituent

CHICAGO, IL – Last Friday, Senator Mike Simmons was canvassing voters in Buena Park, as a candidate for Congress and their current State Senator, when a building resident called the police on him.

See partial video of the interaction here.

After introducing himself Simmons explained that he was a candidate for Congress and currently serves the building’s residents as their State Senator. The woman seemed not to believe Simmons and ultimately asked for everyone’s documentation. She then called the police and ignored all attempts at a conversation by Simmons and the volunteers with him – all people of color. After Simmons left the building on his own, Chicago Police did report to the scene a few minutes later and Simmons spoke to them about the incident.

In 2021, State Senator Mike Simmons sponsored legislation in the Illinois Senate that makes it a hate crime to call the police on a Black person when there is no active threat to public safety. This bill came in response to the alarming trend of police interactions that end up fatal for Black people and people of color, a pattern that is being repeated today with ICE and federal agents killing Americans in cold blood. This incident is a disappointing reminder of the biases and barriers that work against Black people in America at every turn.

Simmons, who lived for 15 years in Uptown as a renter, is the first Black person to represent the far north side of Chicago in the State Senate and would be the first person of color to represent the 9th Congressional District in the US House of Representatives.

“it’s reasonable to ask questions about trans girls in sports” was always intended to mainstream transphobia. It’s absurd that people fell for it. Democrats are constantly letting oppressors set the terms of debate instead of just saying “no, fuck you.”

On Dec. 4, DOJ labeled people who impede or "dox" ICE agents "domestic terrorists." I document how DHS believes following, recording, and protesting agents is "impeding," and has a policy of threatening & arresting ICE observers. That's unconstitutional. www.cato.org/blog/dhs-pol...

Today, after months of requests, I toured the Broadview ICE Processing Facility. I want to share what I saw. The facility has no food vendor, no medical care, and detainees have to use toilets in the middle of shared cells. These are in no way suitable conditions to be holding anyone — period.
