Today, the Vancouver Police Department issued a release saying "when it comes to the perception of public safety, the facts matter." In 2020, when the crime rate in the city was down, Vancouver Police Department Chief Adam Palmer argued that feelings mattered as much as facts.

I wonder what he means by this
“I'll say this about SOGI. I think that it has become an absolute lightning rod for division in our province, and it has become a challenge. And I think that many people are confused about what SOGI has become in our school.
I firmly believe that we have to repeal SOGI.
Obviously we have to provide a safe place for our kids. Just like I said in Bridgeview yesterday, I went as a child to the Bridgeview Elementary School and felt safe.
We need to continue that tradition. But I do believe that SOGI has to be repealed”Conservative Party of BC Leader Lorne Doerkson,

I assume this is the influence of Picketty (although not as far as I am aware a policy prescription he ever made)

I think the Canadian government is in a position to demand they let us self-host, and that they don’t have keys to the data. I don’t think non-sovereign entities could do this, but for a price I’m sure it’s possible.

We also pay Microsoft to locate data centers here (federal government data mostly has to be stored in Canada). And they have offices here already for software people we could probably demand more of that if we tried.

It’s hard to overstate the extent to which constitutional changes are seen as a third rail by politicians in Canada after Charlottetown and Meech Lake.

Certainly if someone brought forward an amendment to abolish the monarchy the first response anyone would have is why the fuck would we do this about a thing that has no practical relevance , instead of addressing some of the many other defects in our constitution.

Billy @billyidles.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
There’s an amendment formula, but they’ve tried twice and no one has tried since because the level of consensus necessary to pass an amendment is basically impossible.

You’ve had a bunch of people (correctly) point out the First Nations related reasons this is challenging but more directly: many experts believe Canada’s constitution is unamendable.

To find someone palatable to the electorate, the cons found the least online person in their caucus and elevated him to leader, and he’s still so internet poisoned he was on about the ostriches.

Hard to overstate the number of people I met volunteering at the drop in centre in Calgary who made huge money in oilsands construction and lost it all to a drug habit in less than a year.

I mean I grew up in Calgary, IDK, I knew a bunch of people who went and worked in Fort Mac during the boom time though. A bunch of the non oilsands part of the industry is also just very heavy oil that still requires expensive processing.

People close to the industry understand this. A lot of political commentators are I think not very literate about this despite it being a huge part of Canada’s economy.

Keller is right that the world will continue using oil and gas well into the future. The relevant question for Canada is: in what volumes, and at what price? Oil demand is already rolling over in China. EV sales are through the roof in most of the world. And OPEC is ready to flood the market.

The best time to diversify Alberta’s economy was 20 years ago. The next best time is after the current big fossil fuel infrastructure project gets built. Definitely not now.

I should note they weren’t charged with buying drugs (which is itself a crime, and not struck down by this as far as I can tell), but with trafficking them.

This is the third incident of a car driving through a residential school march in the last 5 years. Oddly high number of coincidences. When they drove through the one I was at, the police minimized and excused that one at first too. So I'd be curious what this investigation will actually show.

So this month the Toronto Sun published a piece about the Allison Inquiry that called vaccines "a crime against humanity at worst" and demanded arrests, and the National Post published a piece deeming Avi Lewis not just an enemy but a danger to Jewish people, with a thinly coded appeal to violence.

The constitutional right in question is the right to security of the person.

The law as written is so far from fit for purpose you either end up with cops and crowns setting policy by picking and choosing what cases to pursue or else the courts strike down the law and let parliament try again.

The VPD in particular had a longstanding policy before marijuana was legalized not to pursue charges for simple possession of marijuana. This was not that long ago.

I’m sure alcohol prohibition was partly intended to keep money out of the hands of murderous gangsters like Al Capone but it had the opposite effect!

If elected politicians had any interest in governing we wouldn’t be in this situation. But police do prioritize and in this case their priorities were based on media attention, not the law as written!

Billy @billyidles.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Any policy we do is basically balancing harm reduction against people’s discomfort, and IMO the right balance has got to include people not using in public, because people hate that, as well as some sort of control over the supply because that’s what’s killing people.
110
Billy @billyidles.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I think there are lots of different models Ottawa could use but all of them would be politically unpopular. We have this very basic problem as a democracy that a policy that doesn’t work and is killing people, drug prohibition, is nonetheless incredibly popular.
110
Billy @billyidles.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
The way I see it the VPD decided how much media attention was too much based on what the give police more money party was saying to the media. I hope they are happy!

Billy @billyidles.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
The basic facts here are: - Drug prohibition is a failed policy. No one serious about it contests this, nowhere that has done prohibition has succeeded. - Facing reality about this is nonetheless politically unpopular.

Billy @billyidles.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Or heck, the police could use their discretion to target those harms instead of trying to score political points.

Billy @billyidles.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
If you want our elected officials to be doing it, great, but as far as I can tell they don’t want to touch the issue, really. Some politicians on the right want to fear monger about it but they’d still rather let the courts do the hard parts.

Billy @billyidles.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
The big thing about the DULF ruling to me is that the police were using their discretion to basically set drug policy and we are going to hear a bunch of tut-tutting from the right about the courts doing it.

Interesting to me how the VPD pushed the crown to lay charges, apparently because of concern about their own image. At this point the cops are de facto setting drug policy.
