In effect, barely any change.

Yes. It is borderline ridiculous. Mind you so are those manipulative memory loss ads.

Just went to the TVNZ 1news website and ALL the ads are about memory loss products. What does the TVNZ advertising database know about my health that I don't?

What I can't tease out of this is whether businesses think it's going to get better because the coalition will win the election or because it will lose the election.

Agree. It could not be more finely balanced between two sharply contrasting views of where we want to go.

Yes. Although there's too much uncertainty here to be sure of anything. Based on the Reid poll that would give Labour+Green+TPM one seat more than the coalition. But we are talking about a difference which is under the margin of error and we've no idea how the missing votes would distribute.

Bill Bennett @billbennett.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
It partly depends on where the missing Opportunity votes go instead. if they split evenly, then yes, you'd be right. But if they all go to Labour or Green then that would take the opposition parties across the line.

There seem to be plenty of data points In that graph... enough to show 5.5% is not an outlier. I'm always conscious when reading polls that a 3.5% margin of error means the margin for a party polling ~5% is ~1.5 percentage points. So in a single poll Opportunity is anywhere from 4% to 7%.

Both funny and sad at the same time.

Bill Bennett @billbennett.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I hear the numbers, but 80% seems heroic with undecideds consistently sitting at ~5% or higher and the difference between the Opportunity poll number and the 5% threshold only exceeding the margin of error in a single poll. Or have I missed something?

Secretly the Kiwibank marketing execs will be rubbing their hands with glee. Every dollar spent on the ad campaign will have been multiplied many times by this attention and the brand is out there front and centre every single time with no actual harm done.

Cartoon showing two gallery visitors stand before a framed abstract painting labeled 'AI ART'. The painting shows an abstract swirl of paint. The caption read: 'I love how this piece captures the exact moment a thousand artists were squeezed for their data.'

While I absolutely love the idea of trains between Wellington and Auckland, I'd love it even more if the rail journey time was more in line with car travel time between the two cities.

I have no objection to people parking in the street directly outside my house. How could I? But there are clearly two spaces and almost every time I return home there is a giant truck-like SUV or similar that is parked across both spaces. Do people get a morality bypass when they buy one of these?

When we first visited New Zealand, 40 years ago, we took the daytime trip from Wellington to Auckland and even though we were held up for two hours because of a signal failure at Hamilton, it was a memorable experience.

It was great in the 1980s. I stayed there when it was part of a government owned hotel chain. Restaurant did a mean rack of lamb… ten years later and in private hands it was distinctly so-so. I don’t think any building upkeep had been attempted since It was sold.

Remind yourself that you will never be those people. That you will never need to stoop as low as those people. Demonstrating to them you are in great shape despite their best efforts can be more powerful than physical blows or a pointless, needlessly aggressive response.

You can explain this to farmers until you are blue in the face and they won't listen. But they will have clean up their act once overseas buyers start cancelling contracts.

Absolutely... although it's not much of an argument in favour of allowing the deal to proceed when the actual issues are all about the competitive effects. I'm slightly surprised the ComCom paid so much attention to the effects on the equipment suppliers.

Today's newsletter looks at how the Commerce Commission will decide if the proposed 2degrees-One NZ network sharing joint venture should go ahead. It's important in the light of what happened long term after two supermarket chains merged 25 years ago. billbennett.co.nz/comcom-to-te...

I’m not convinced this is a wise announcement at a time the best brains in New Zealand politics are thinking about how they can deal with rapacious supermarkets. At the very least it won’t help their PR whitewashing. www.rnz.co.nz/news/busines...

One thing to think about with polls and the forthcoming election: There is a strong positive correlation between the electorates where the Green Party vote is high and where the ACT Party vote is high.

My Dad had hair-raising stories about V1s and V2s which hit London when he was a schoolboy. Even when I was in my teens there were still many bomb sites in English cities... that would be the 1970s.

There is a bit of a "last touched by the Luftwaffe" feel. It only really needs a façade. It's 100% a guess... but there are parts of London that have scheduled for an update since forever. This looks like one. It's at least 40 years since I was at that station. But I recognised it immediately.

Whenever a politician uses the term "hardworking Kiwis" you know something dodgy is coming. On a similar note, "mum and dad investors" appears to be code for "rich people".
