everyone has a line over which they won't vote straight ticket D or R. if you keep stepping over the line for some people while giving them big sloppy wino winks, eventually they might stop playing along - that's on you, that's coalition management. clean it up or quit whining

you have to have trust if you want a coalition to take some Ls for you. dems have undermined trust w trans people by maintaining a basically limitless permission structure to play footsie with eliminationist transphobia even in very blue states. going "but it's just a few people" doesn't change that

also obviously this is just wrong. clinton signed DOMA, DADT was implemented in the wake of AIDS both forcing the conversation about gay people and literally decimating gay men, the argument straightforwardly wasn't about youth segregation and the other side weren't yet full bore fascists

it helps to read replies sometimes. easier to understand what someone's actually arguing if you realize they think MLK was wrong about white moderates because LBJ signed the civil rights act

Hey friends! I had a pair of unexpected large expenses this month with a minor car accident and an unexpected pet fee from my landlord. Now, I can afford both of these expenses, but it's gonna be tight. I'm trying to raise the $550 to patch the hole in my month's budget. My venmo is @Bill-Eldridge.

Hey friends! Money is a bit tight right now. Nothing earth shattering, just a little less liquid than is comfortable because I had some big ticket expenses in July. If anyone has any cash to spare and is interested in helping out with grocery and gas money, venmo is @Bill-Eldridge

In sum, skip the Atlantic on this one and read Monstrous Regiment, a great standalone Pratchett and a perfect book for right now, because it takes on propaganda, war, gender, and how religious zealots starve nations and ruin everything. Quote me on that, why don’t you.

Pratchett’s politics evolved over the series, because he wrote them over the course of most of his life, and his own thoughts evolved. This does not make his politics “hard to pin down” unless what you’re trying to do is avoid describing the conclusions he reached about, say, trans rights, HELEN.

From the start Vimes celebrates justice rather than mere order: his ancestor was a famous regicide and that possibility is always lurking. He fights against other police on the regular, and in Night Watch he straight up joins the revolutionaries in the People’s Republic of Treacle Mine Road.

Sure, he started as a silly joke about an activist who became a zombie by refusing to die out of optimist zeal — but by the time we reach Night Watch, where we see that death, it is intensely moving and heroic. Related: to say Vimes is an example of lionizing the police is, in a word, LMAO

Sometimes as an NYT books columnist you find yourself quoted in the Atlantic by Helen Lewis, who believes two odd things: 1. That nobody is reading Pratchett anymore (instead of all the time, as they should), and 2. That Pratchett’s politics are hard to pin down, and Reg Shoe is not a fucking hero.
