FINALLY, author #6 from Six Stories a Semester! Jason Rice's "Buffalo" is an elegant piece of dialog, like riding along in the back seat. Dude worked on "The Adventures of Pete & Pete," "The Joan Rivers Show," and "Can We Shop?" WUT.

Author #5 from the first edition of Six Stories a Semester: Eliana Ketcham, author of “Stripes on the Saltbox,” born right here in our Beverly backyard. She takes us to a world where time is out of order, not unlike the universe created by fellow Mass. writer SE Grove in her Mapmakers Trilogy.

Book Shop of Beverly Farms @bfbookshop.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
Author #4 from Vol. I, No. 1 of Six Stories a Semester: Mia Huerta! Her story, "Between the Branches," explores the intersections between the natural world, ancestral lineage, Chicana identity, and nostalgia.

Book Shop of Beverly Farms @bfbookshop.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
Author #3 from our first edition of Six Stories a Semester: Emily Franklin! She's written 25 books, including “The Lioness of Boston,” based on the life of Isabella Stewart Gardner, and now she's written a short story for us that pushes the boundaries of what a story can be!

Book Shop of Beverly Farms @bfbookshop.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
Next up for Six Stories a Semester authors: Celeste Amidon! She's the winner of the 2025 New Ohio Review Ellis Prize for Fiction, but we promise she lives here in New England. Her "Flowers" takes love and grief and hope and heartache and smashes them all together.

To get you fired up for the release of Six Stories a Semester, we'll be introducing the authors, one by one, over the next week. First up, Steve Almond, who just happens to be the author of "Truth Is the Arrow, Mercy Is the Bow," a book about story-writing! But he's got books and books...

Can't remember us being more universally enthusiastic on a single episode. These books rock. Four of the best writers working today, all of them seemingly at the height of their powers.

I don’t usually read a book Sam just talked about on the pod bc it’s not like I’m going to talk about it AGAIN on another ep, and it would be really stupid to do that with a 700-page book, but I loved Time Traveler’s Wife so much and Sam called the new book “ambitious” so here I am, 100 pages in.

It's a huge mistake to "adjust to" or "adapt" to generative AI. There's rarely been a more clearcut situation to reject vehemently for so many reasons. One reason beyond those that apply now is the future capacity for proactive manipulation and distortion. We need less outside interference not more.
