Any day is a good day to spend in the bookstore but today was particularly nice.

Publishers imploring us to stock up need to also be ready for increased returns. I’m a good salesperson, but am I that good? We’ll see! I hate returns but went to a panel on doing returns at a recent trade show & everyone on it LOVED doing returns. Convinced me I just need to change my perspective.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

So many people have told me the audiobook of THE CALAMITY CLUB is such a banger but it’s over 28 hours long and I have a mental block on anything longer than 14 hours.

Going to Frankfurt next weeks means I need to be so incredibly organized. Event orders are in early. I’m completely packed for our next book fair two weeks early. Spring orders are built and mostly ready to go. Xmas is priced and organized in the basement. Just need to pay some bills and it’s ON.

In college I woke and felt a presence. In the corner by the closet. Next morning, my roommate says, I had the strangest dream there was someone in the room…in the corner by the closet. A little later, we run into the guy who had our room two yrs ago. Oh yeah, he says, that room is totally haunted.

Haven’t touched the phone for hours. A woman from Texas calls and starts yelling at me for calling her over and over and I need to stop. I tell her I haven’t dialed out on this line today. “Someone there keeps calling me and I don’t appreciate it!” I’m here alone. “Stop calling me!” I’m shook.

Downpour all day and the UPS guy is telling me (again) he can’t possible carry all these big heavy boxes to my door and must leave them in the freestanding garage. Like, I’m literally half your size and how do you think the boxes are going to get into the store?

Ordering books for a conference and authors have entered their own ISBNs for the books they’ve requested we carry. Shocking to me how many authors get their ISBNs just completely wrong. I don’t get it. Aren’t you cutting and pasting?

I also finished Kate Atkinson’s new book OUR NOBLE SELVES over the weekend. It took a long time for the mystery to come in. But you could see the clues being planted (not in a bad way). She’s so good at madcap. She’s so good at pointing out the bizarre in funny ways. It’s just a fun read. #booksky

Finished reading SOPHIE, STANDING THERE by Meg Mason. Loved her first book SORROW & BLISS. Sophie took a bit longer to get into but I’m glad I persevered. There’s a character (not Sophie) I can’t stop thinking about. She was so perfectly known on the page with incredible dialogue. #booksky

So apropos of nothing in particular, let’s talk about media tie-in novel pay vs. original work pay, shall we? Let’s say you write a novel. It’s set in your own world, your own characters, and titled The Original. You get a book deal! Look at you go!

Laurie is the best. She was attentive to our kids when we visited the library regularly when they were younger. After I bought the bookstore, she called me up to come sell books whenever they had an author visiting. We’ve been so lucky to have her in Ipswich. It’s cool she got a proper send-off.

This is the message: yes, shop early, but also, be ready and willing to trust the expertise of booksellers. There's a way of shopping at bookstores that acts as if the booksellers are just there to stock the shelves with product. I guarantee you, bookselling is not that kind of job.

The message booksellers are getting for Q4 is December is going to be (another) shitshow. Paper and ink shortages, printer back-ups, warehouse back-ups/staffing shortages, carrier delays. Order up now, we’re being told. Who knows what stock will be available later.

Jill Lepore gave the keynote at our bookseller trade organization conference yesterday and she is a real gift of a human being. She was talking about her new book THE RISE AND FALL OF THE ARTIFICIAL STATE, which she called “a grim story, but a fun read” (and then laughed at herself).

Just remembering the two tween girls whispering in the bookstore the other day and then one turned to me and said, do we have to whisper? And I said, nope, it’s not a library, and they looked all around and seemed satisfied that bookstores and libraries are in fact similar but different spaces.
