If the boycott of US goods & services by Canadians was bad already, I have a feeling they haven’t seen anything yet. I feel for the many US businesses and folks who oppose Trump, but Trump and his cronies are waging economic war on Canada and other countries, and they have given us no other choice.

@westernu.ca received over $10M in research support funds (RSF) last year, and that’s not even counting indirect costs to grants. Those funds are meant to support infrastructure that allows tri council research to proceed. Why the inability to prepare for power outages?

Day 4 of no power. We’ve had an unsettling number of multi day power outages @WesternU over the last few years but this is the longest yet I think. Do other Canadian universities deal with this too?? It’s going to be a nightmare to handle the aftermath whenever we’re out of the dark.

But sure, let’s put up a bioconvergence mega building and a pathogens research facility instead of maintaining the infrastructure we already have.

The vibe from admin is very much “eh, if the power is out Friday through Sunday just run your little experiment next week” without recognizing that prolonged power outages and freezer thaws can cost some of us years, not days. And lab animals are kept behind card readers which require power to work!

Day 3 of no power for @WesternU Biology buildings. This costs us irreplaceable samples, $$ reagents and jeopardizes animal welfare. Modernize the infrastructure!

Riding bikes is 10X more important than electric cars for reaching net-zero cities. And that’s just the climate emissions. Doesn’t include the massive public & personal cost difference, the air & noise pollution difference, the massive space difference, etc, etc…Via @theconversation.bsky.social

Active travel can help tackle the climate crisis earlier than electric vehicles – even if you swap the car for a bike for just one trip a day.

To carry 50,000 people per hour in each direction, a city needs a 175m wide road for cars. Even if those cars are electric. And then there’s all the parking. OR a city can move A LOT MORE people in a lot less space, with A LOT LESS public money, emissions, pollution, noise etc. Choices. Simple.
Graphic showing a 9 m wide track for metros can move as many people as a 175 m wide, 7 lane road for cars.

I'm particularly impressed that when Ford reduced/froze tuition fees, he decided that the policy corollary was "let's cut student aid" Now that tuition fees are going up again, the policy corollary is "let's cut student aid!" Nothing if not consistent.

Putin pioneered this. No opposition is legitimate. Regular, decent, “ordinary” people cannot possibly be against us because only we represent “the real people.” Tell-tale sign of authoritarianism.

It seems like Big Tech has decided the solution is not to make AI products people want to use but rather to require people to use AI, either by incorporating it into products where it is unwanted or potentially by just requiring people to use it, perhaps via alliance with an authoritarian.

The gender gap in higher education has been widening for decades. Do universities need to do more to entice men back?

Community and government scrutiny are building against "ebikes" as a whole and that is a huge problem for our movement. We need to regulate the shit out of them (throttles bikes) before it harms the ebikes for mobility revolution that is helping to get more people out of cars.

I wonder if the Columbia leadership realizes (or cares) how much blowback there might be from *within* the academy. This post, from a Cornell Law professor, is worth reading: 3d.laboratorium.net/2025-07-25-c...
I pledge that I will not provide any service to Columbia University. I will not speak at conferences held at or organized by Columbia. I will not publish with Columbia publications or provide peer reviews for them. I will not provide outside tenure evaluations for Columbia departments. I will not contribute in any way to the institution until everyone who is responsible for this week’s shameful decision has resigned, retired, or been fired, and until Columbia repudiates their catastrophic choice.
