I marvel at how Jim Henson’s brain worked. This was a presentation piece to the executives at CBS when he was trying to get them, ultimately unsuccessfully, to pick up THE MUPPET SHOW... But if you’re a TV executive sitting in a boardroom watching this, there’s no way it’s not leaving an impression.

The underappreciated point here is that taking the messy, contingent nature of scheduling, communication, and navigating social relationships is something that AI people think these tools can do. When in fact it is quite difficult and takes a lot of social skill.

If you were asked to consider the biggest threat to humanity in the next ten years, you might choose the worsening climate disasters or ever-growing number of wars. But tech oligarchs want us to believe it’s chatbots that can’t even tell truth from bullshit. disconnect.blog/the-media-ha...
For the past several weeks, we’ve been treated to breathless coverage of the supposed major threat presented by artificial intelligence. If we’re to believe the titans of the AI industry and the media reports mindlessly echoing their every utterance, humanity’s years may be numbered.

It’s not because of climate change and how we’re actively making our planet less fit for human habitation. Indeed, many of these prophets of AI doom don’t actually believe climate change is much of a threat at all. It’s also not because increasingly unstable geopolitics is shifting the world toward greater conflict and the risk of global war.

Voltaire absolutely skewering a lot of people on the internet (1759)
"Oh! what a superior man," said Candide below his breath. "What a great genius is this Pococurante! Nothing can please him."
After their survey of the library they went down into the garden, where Candide praised its several beauties.
"I know of nothing in so bad a taste," said the master. "All you see here is merely trifling.
After to-morrow I will have it planted with a nobler design."
"Well," said Candide to Martin when they had taken their leave, "you will agree that this is the happiest of mortals, for he is above everything he possesses."
"But do you not see," answered Martin, "that he is disgusted with all he possesses? Plato observed a long while ago that those stomachs are not the best that reject all sorts of food."
"But is there not a pleasure," said Candide, "in criticising everything, in pointing out faults where others see nothing but beauties?"
"That is to say," replied Martin, "that there is some pleasure in having no pleasure."

Rep. Jasmine Crockett defended victims of Epstein and Trump. Why is she kissing up to Chris Brown? To (rightfully) lambast your colleagues for supporting a sexual abuser, only to have those politics fly out the window for something so inconsequential, is, on its face, a baffling choice.
