RNLI volunteers put themselves in harm’s way to save lives. They should never face abuse or threats for doing so. That includes the crews based on the Thames, who respond to hundreds of incidents every year. They deserve to be thanked, not attacked.

If Reform really did cut £50bn from the benefits bill for working age adults (10 million of whom receive some sort of benefit), then that would mean recipients, most of whom are amongst the poorest in the country, will lose, on average, £5000 each per year. #bbcnews #r4today

In the first seven weeks of 2026, sewage has been flowing into the River Itchen for over 400 hours and counting - and that was in just one monitoring site. This is unacceptable. If we fail to protect chalk streams now, we risk losing them forever. Find my letter here:
As I write, sewage is pouring into three rivers in my constituency – the River Itchen, the River Meon and the River Hamble.

In the first seven weeks of 2026, sewage has been flowing into the River Itchen for over 400 hours and counting in just one monitoring site, near Headbourne Worthy. This is a protected and rare chalk stream that runs right through the centre of the city of Winchester.

The River Itchen is one of just six chalk streams in England that support the endangered Atlantic Salmon population, which is currently laying eggs needed for the species' survival. Project White Hart, the campaign to save this species, has warned that a single major event could be catastrophic.

In the River Meon, there have been over 500 confirmed sewage dumps this year alone. This is happening where beavers have recently been reintroduced, and the sewage flows right through the South Downs National Park. A recent report from the South Downs National Park Authority found that 90% of the park's rivers are not meeting a good standard for nature. If we cannot protect nature and landscapes in our National Parks, how can the public have confidence in our ability to protect them anywhere?

Action on this cannot wait.

Failure to protect Hampshire’s chalk streams will lead to ecological catastrophe. These habitats are exceptionally rare, rich in biodiversity, support unique flora and fauna, and are impossible to recreate or replace.

Will the government introduce an immediate package of support to clean up the sewage spills that have poured into Hampshire’s rivers this winter and commit to an urgent meeting with me to act on these spills and safeguard our chalk streams from future discharges?

The £300m that we have secured in a whole host of areas shows just how serious we are about getting stuff done. With the Scottish Liberal Democrats, you get grown-up, sensible politics. You can get more of that by backing us in May on your second, peach-coloured ballot paper.
When it became clear that this budget would pass anyway because Labour walked away from the negotiating table, the Scottish Liberal Democrats promised that we would squeeze it for every penny to deliver for people across the country- and that is exactly what we have done.

Whilst the best thing that Scotland needs is a complete change of government, by backing the Scottish Liberal Democrats on your second, peach ballot paper in May, you can vote for more grown-up, sensible politics that actually gets stuff done.

Lammy must consider our @libdems.org.uk plan to clear the court backlog before taking a sledgehammer to jury trials. There’s no evidence his plans will reduce delays. We’d double daily trials across England & Wales & boost efficiency - cutting the backlog without risking the right to trial by jury.
