This was fantastic - the against-the-odds story of Rosemary’s beginnings as a scientist, a lifetime of fantastic research clearly articulated, and a clear passion for the natural world, advocacy, and equality. Very inspiring talk! Big thanks to Rosemary and the BES EE team for organising.

Today was a brilliant day. I got to watch a webinar by Rosemary Grant about the evolution of Darwin's finches hosted by @bes-evolecol.bsky.social. Her insight into the challenges she faced in starting her career were as captivating as the findings of recent studies she is involved in.

An inspiring feminist talk! The science is great but what resonated with me most was taking the space to talk about all the societal obstacles she faced, the motivation from seeing other women suceed in what seemed impossible & the importance of trying and trying again.

The timing of this webinar is apt as the #SelfishGene is turning 50 this month. @arvidagren.bsky.social will be talking to us about what the gene’s-eye view still explains well, and how this perspective has been refined over the last half-century.

I couldn't agree more! It was truly inspiring to hear about Dr. Grant's foundational Darwin finches research with the personal and societal context around it! We're aiming to keep having the @bes-evolecol.bsky.social webinars be talks not just on great science but also the people behind them!

Rosemary Grant telling us in her @bes-evolecol.bsky.social webinar that even after finishing school, as a woman she was not allowed to open a bank account without a man accompanying her. Ghastly experience, but wonderful to hear of the early steps on her path to such enormous scientific impact.

What a fabulous study! Coevolution between plants and animals not only inspires our banner image, but famously was something CharlesDarwin understood so well that he was able to predict the existence of a moth species based wholly on the shape of a flower he posited it must pollinate.

Sooo looking forward to this, not least because it’ll be where our Special Interest Group officially gets started. It’s going to be wonderful to bring our community together at its own dedicated conference. We’ve also got lots planned for the coming year to maintain that community…
