Remember the summer heatwaves in the UK in 2026? The late May heatwave was exceptional: an event +4.3 sd above mean - likely to occur only once every few decades under normal conditions. It was also unusual in being early and coinciding with tit breeding season. What consequences did it have? 🧵1/n
Temperature fluctuations in Wytham Woods between 15 May and June 15 for 2023-2026. I had a great time at the 1st #ExE2026 conference! Lots of amazing talks spanning genetics, behaviour, ecology and evolution 🐤 I presented a poster about the effects of sublethal pesticide exposure on cricket behaviour. The paper is in the final stages of review, so hopefully more to share soon 🦗🤞

The evolutionary ecology #ExE2026 conference in Cornwall had a very similar vibe to the American Society of Naturalists @asn-amnat.bsky.social stand alone meetings. It would be great to have more European participation in ASN and coordinate future meetings, maybe alternating sides of the Atlantic.

The title slide from my talk: Are relatives their own worst enemies? Competition among kin drives balancing and diversifying selection in an IBM. Featuring soe sketchy illustrations of birds pecking at seeds, and a bird with a medium-length beak "diversifying" into a bird with a long beak and a bird with a short beak.
