words I was flabbergasted to hear on October 5, 2026 from an adult employee of an institute of higher learning in a large city. "Dune? Is that a book or a movie?"

The clearest and most succinct expression I've read of how, beyond the clear fascist rhetoric, the Prairieland prosecutions have terrifyingly expanded federal legal power, beyond the point many feds even wanted to go.
For other activists on the left — and on the right — the Prairieland case has set a dangerous precedent. Cadeddu, the federal defense attorney, told me that the most worrying of all the “terrorist acts” was vandalism. There is no dollar amount set on what sort of damage might qualify as an act of terror. Even throwing a snowball at an ICE vehicle during a protest and scratching the paint or damaging a taillight might qualify. “In theory, if you happen to be on a Signal chat with some people planning a protest, and one of the people at that protest — you don’t even have to know them — throws that snowball, you could be implicated in material support for terrorism, simply for helping to organize,” she says. “That’s the meaning of the case.”

Here's the part where Cornell requires a "reflection paper" from a perp who testified that after he got the "free pussy" text, he only went into the room because one of the guys in there had a vape he could borrow.
Within ninety (90) days after this Decision becomes final (otherwise subject to
reasonable extension approved by the Title IX Coordinator), Respondent will submit
to the Title IX OfEcc a reflection paper that engages with the specific circumstances for
which he was found responsible and contains a detailed proposal for future University
educational materials to train undergraduate students around the intersection of social
media use and sexual harassment, as well as bystander intervention. The reflection paper
must also include recommendations to the University's Office of Sorority & Fraternity
Life with respect to substance use prevention efforts in Greek Life organizations on
campus. Use of artificial intelligence tools of any kind in the creation of this reflection
paper is prohibited.
" The Hearing Panel expects that Respondent will take this educational opportunity
seriously and apply what he learns to help improve the University/Greek Life community.

Pleeeeeeeaaaaaaase tell me that all those "you should need a government ID to access the internet" people are rethinking this position now. [We know they aren't. Ed.]
The first two paragraphs of the linked-to story:

"Denmark has suffered a major data breach that has given unauthorised individuals access to names, addresses and personal identification numbers belonging to about 8.8 million people registered in the country’s central population database.

"The breach occurred after unidentified individuals misused a private Danish company’s legitimate access to search the Central Person Register (CPR), the government said in a statement Monday."

A key insight from Bradbury is not merely that politicians, boosters, and the media misrepresent the public benefits of taxpayer funded stadiums. They really don't care. They're just starstruck. From my review:
What Bradbury understands, and what he does a good job of explaining here, is that even the backers of these projects don't truly believe the economic promises. They offer them because they think they have to in order to justify billions in public investment, but what's really going on is much simpler than that. Mayors, city councilmen, governors and legislators who greenlight these expenditures are, at bottom, simply star struck. They like being invited to parties, press conferences, and rallies with sports executives, athletes, and media stars. They love the free tickets and suite access, especially if a Super Bowl or an All-Star Game is involved. They love being able to campaign on stuff like "we kept the Mudville Nine in Mudville!" even if the Mudville Nine was never going anyplace. It's all about vibes and the perks and the emotional horseshit of sports fandom for these people. Which is fine for any given sports fan but which is something that should not be dictating how our elected representatives spend billions of dollars of our money.

This One Will Be Different is rooted in solid scholarship, but it's an easy and accessible read. And it doesn't just explain the problem – if you're reading this you likely already understand the problem on some level – but in its final section Bradbury offers some potential solutions. They come in the form of recommendations to four distinct groups of people – economists, government decision-makers, the press, and the public – regarding the role each of them can play in helping us achieve better policy outcomes when team owners start saying they need a new stadium. It's truly practical stuff which shows just how passionate an advocate Bradbury is for his cause as opposed to a mere observer. It's a good look for an academic writer as far as I'm concerned, even if we've been wrongfully told that scholars aren't supposed to be advocates.
