You’re not alone, I wish I could remember who said it, but they made a point that becoming a manager generally sucks, you give up control and take on accountability, but at least you get status and can mentor people. Now, AI delivers the worst part and confers none of the benefits.

i am deeply frustrated by this market that is not even capitalism, where companies who will forever lose money can claim exorbitant valuations based on the opinions of their friends. we need far more ruthlessness.

I am a software engineer who co-founded a business making an app for physical plant inspections. After being pitched a thousand ideas for apps to sell ads online it was THRILLING to design for an actual job with physical constraints. You know who had an allergic reaction? Investors.

I’ve had a similar idea but hadn’t thought of “let me schedule when I will use it” as the constraint to design around. You can’t force people to reply within the hour, but you can guarantee that no messages will be delivered until 9am tomorrow.

This totally tracks with my experience, and it’s actually why I quit Threads, where the algorithm seemed to put my posts in front of more people, prolonging the arguments. (I’m mostly ignored here.)

Have you seen anyone propose a GPL-style license that says if you feed the licensed work into an LLM, its output must be licensed on the same terms? Only issue I can think of is the courts have said LLM output is not copyrightable. But I suppose you could require the model weights be published.

I’m on board with most of what you’re saying but do you really think the “vast majority” of programmers are giving code away? surely far more people read Stack Overflow than ever post there, far more people download from GitHub than publish there, etc.

Oh! You were saying humans “steal”, not “train”. Then depending on who is blamed for stealing, either the false equivalence still applies, or you’re saying all developers are as bad as AI company developers. Regardless, that’s something only great artists do.

I hate to say it but this would be a better comeback if it had been common for development teams to assign a feature’s implementation and tests to different people

“bad in a hard to repair way” sounds very much like the computer code it produces, too

Benjamin راغب @benzado.com · 13/10/2026
just because we describe LLM configuration as “training” doesn’t mean it’s the same thing as when a human learns something; treating them as equivalent is a logical fallacy

my take is that LLMs are useful for software development but only in the same way that cigarettes are an effective treatment for ADHD

another good way of thinking about what cracking value radio 4 is that it makes twenty hours of programming a day - news, drama, comedy, documentaries, a soap opera, arts - for about £90m/yr, while spotify pay joe rogan about £60m/year to listen gullibly to liars for about nine hours per week

does “alignment” mean anything different than “obedience” when applied to LLMs?

We’ve got to stop repeating “humanity will lose control of AI” when “OpenAI will do something negligent with this technology” is much clearer.

Instead you find sentences like this: “…acceptance of political violence, such as we saw during the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, or the 2017 shooting of House GOP Whip Steve Scalise, when Scalise was shot in Virginia during the annual Congressional Baseball Game for Charity.”

Ironically, Dame Louise Richardson nearly repeats your point: “One of our grantees, the Dartmouth Polarization Research Lab, finds that politicians drive polarization by intentionally creating and amplifying divisions.” Which politicians? The sentence links to a page that doesn’t even mention it.

I 100% agree with that. But whenever I encounter “polarization” it’s almost exclusively from someone who is choosing the word because it does not imply either side is at fault. I’m reading Mason’s paper now and it really seems to me she’s responding to the same.

OK. I think we’re defining terms differently, because if anything I would expect to be told I’m *denying* agency to liberals. @rotovalue.com says it better than I can:

The framing of polarization as an immune response, AKA a symptom, rings true to me. Treating only symptoms makes you feel better momentarily while you get progressively more sick. Which feels a lot like recent history to me.

Started thinking this morning, it would be cool to participate in a thing where you can submit code for human people to review, and you can also review human-written code, with some kind of economy/metric to encourage fair participation. Closest thing to that is the Code Review Stack Exchange:

You identified something interesting, that every series that tries to “redefine” Star Trek ends up more like the whole of Star Trek by its end. Enterprise and Discovery are the strongest examples. Could simply be that over time the writers give in to hardcore fans, but I doubt it’s that simple.

In the 1850s, “The Slave Power” was a popular term for the amorphous, wealthy, anti-democratic force that was consuming the country. Once you realize that AI is just a way to bring it back, the similarities are everywhere.

The most important thing about navigating ADHD as an adult is learning to design your environment and schedule for the person you are, not the person neurotypical people think you could be if you tried harder.
