Got one of our first AI generated PR contributions today. +6k lines of code that introduced several painful bugs while trying to fix an error. Real issue: `resolver="1"` in Cargo.toml. The compiler said that in the first line of the returned error!

In 1981 the LA Herald posited that "feminine bicyclists are becoming extremely cruel" and was "a form of insanity"; caused by " the intense exhilaration rapid riding brings about." We laugh at it now, but news today is just as capable of falsehoods. cdnc.ucr.edu?a=d&d=LAH189... #cycling #news

Very cool. Dimethyl sulfide--a compound that, at least on Earth, is exclusively produced by marine algae--has been found on an exoplanet for the first time, and in large quantities. Current explanation is a giant ocean filled with algae, otherwise it requires an unknown abiotic process. LIFE!!
On Earth, the only known source of dimethyl sulfide is life. In the ocean, for instance, certain forms of algae produce the compound, which wafts into the air and adds to the sea’s distinctive odor. Long before the Webb telescope was launched, astrobiologists had wondered whether dimethyl sulfide might serve as a sign of life on other planets.

Last year, Dr. Madhusudhan and his colleagues got a second chance to look for dimethyl sulfide. As K2-18b orbited in front of its star, they used a different instrument on the Webb telescope to analyze the starlight passing through the planet’s atmosphere. This time they saw an even stronger signal of dimethyl sulfide, along with a similar molecule called dimethyl disulfide.

“It is a shock to the system,” Dr. Madhusudhan said. “We spent an enormous amount of time just trying to get rid of the signal.”

No matter how the scientists revisited their readings, the signal stayed strong. They concluded that K2-18b may in fact harbor a tremendous supply of dimethyl sulfide in its atmosphere, thousands of times higher than the level found on Earth. This would suggest that its Hycean seas are brimming with life.

General PSA: this move, called "filtering", is not only a safety maneuver, it is generally legal and often ENCOURAGED. Many places like SF deliberately paint "bike boxes" to situate cyclists ahead of queued cars at lights. Assuming drivers aren't stopped in it by the time you get up there.
Screenshot of Market Street in San Francisco from Google Maps street view. A black BMW sedan is sitting on a green painted area in front of a crosswalk. Barely visible on the far side of the green box is a thick white line that would typically indicate "stop here on red." A dashed green bike lane leads up to the box alongside the car. In fairness to the driver, the car is likely in motion on a green light and not stopped in the bike box, but this illustrates a common practice when drivers are stopped and a cyclist hasn't already taken the box.

It's fascinating to read as a discussion. Earlier versions of Leptos were not Send/Sync and our biggest issue was easy integration with Axum. Now that it is, the pain comes from non Send/Sync browser types in web_sys and running Futures in specific threads

At its heart, Star Trek is a utopian fantasy about a society so advanced that they are capable of holding productive meetings that last no longer than three minutes
A TNG scene. We're in the Enterprise conference room, where Picard is holding a meeting with Data, Troi, and Dr Crusher. Barclay is also there, for unknown reasons. Maybe he wandered into the meeting and just sat down, and everyone was too polite to mention it. That happened to me once. I was visiting an office location I didn't normally go to and I wasn't quite sure which conference room I was supposed to be in. I walked into one and sat down and it took me five minutes to realize I was in the wrong meeting. From the perspective of the people in that room, halfway through that meeting, a stranger walked in, sat next to the boss, took notes for five minutes, then walked out without saying a word.

Asilisaurus is a puzzling little reptile. The Triassic creature has some traits that look dinosaur-like, and might indicate it’s an early relative of dinosaurs like Edmontosaurus and Triceratops, but it also has some ancient traits that would make it a protodinosaur. Either way, it’s adorable. 🧪

@jay.bsky.team @why.bsky.team There is no repentance, it's not accidental. It's not "heated discussion". This is why people who engage in this have to be banned. Because they will just double down, it condones the behavior, and they're still free to harm their targets

Death threats being an instaban is such a low bar that if Bluesky fails to clear it promptly it poisons their entire moderation strategy. I too will jump ship
