A gray resin cicada sculpture in my hand, body about the size of my hand and wings hanging off. Rough draft at this stage, no textures, but good to see scale and proportion compared to the (real) double drummer cicada in the quoted post 😳

#InsertAnInvert2024 Relationships - Babies After hatching, vinegaroon babies cling to their mother's butt for protection, forming a clump of tangled orbs with legs. In most species, this lasts for a few weeks, until the dozens of babies are old enough to molt for the very first time. 🎨 🐡

A tiny male sweat bee - around 4 or 5 mm. - drinking nectar on goldenrod in Montana last month. Single shot at about 3x and cropped. People are probably more familiar with the bright metallic green sweat bees, but I also like the more subtle coppery hues on this little guy's head. #ento 🐙 🌿

It is mind blowing. I got a photo of one with wings out, but the head is out of focus. 😭 Right after that, it packed the wings back up and walked away. I don't photo stack or Photoshop very often, but I might do something to combine a head in focus on the wings deployed shot. It's so amazing.

Up close with a worker fire ant, Solenopsis invicta. The crispness of this image is a result of focus-stacking, where I took just the sharpest part from each of the dozens of input images at different focal planes and merged them.
