Well, well, well. Looks like someone is about to start reaping
Statement on respect for human dignity and opposition to discrimination
(19-08-2026) Over the past few days, Ghent University has received many enquiries following the death of Cambridge professor Jason Arday and the public reactions to it.

We are aware of the questions and concerns surrounding this matter and understand that it has affected many people. We wish to clarify how the university is handling this situation. First and foremost, Ghent University is shocked by the death of Professor Arday. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, colleagues and students. His death has also hit our own academic community hard.

At the same time, we wish to be clear about the values we uphold as a university. Ghent University stands for respect for human dignity and opposes discrimination, hatred and racism. We attach great importance to academic freedom and to open academic debate, even when views are controversial. However, that freedom is not unlimited. It goes hand in hand with responsibility and may be restricted in order to protect the rights of others.

For this reason, the university takes the recent public statements made by a postdoctoral researcher at Ghent University regarding this matter very seriously. Ghent University has decided to take appropriate action within its powers and the applicable framework. We do not wish to pre-empt any potential decisions at this stage, in order to maintain objectivity. It is important to be transparent, whilst also respecting the confidentiality inherent in a personnel file.

The death of Professor Arday should prompt reflection. We hope that lessons will be learnt from what has happened regarding the way we treat one another both within and outside the academic world, particularly when people become the subject of public controversy.

There are reasons for what’s going on with this administration and the military
The Unequal Effects of Unequal Contact:
Power, Race, and Social Cohesion in the U.S. Military
Salma Mousa*
Eddie Yangt
May 21, 2025
Abstract
The contact hypothesis posits that cooperative, equal contact reduces prejudice.
Yet in practice, contact is often unequal — both within the contact setting itself, or because of inherent power imbalances between minority and majority groups. Leveraging rich data from surveys, censuses, and testimonials among servicemembers in WWII and the Vietnam War, we develop and test a theory of unequal contact. For minori-ties, we find that equal contact improves intergroup attitudes, while unequal contact between soldiers and lieutenants sparks backlash effects. For majorities, we find mixed effects: White soldiers respond to equal contact with more support for military integration but less support for Black rights, suggesting that equality may trigger feelings of threat. We add qualitative nuance to these results by digitizing thousands of veteran testimonies from both wars, revealing drastic asymmetric in how White vs. non-White veterans describe their experiences with race within and outside the military. Our results underscore the importance of internal and external power status in determining the effects of contact.

"Me-Search" New study by @eomeral.bsky.social and colleagues investigates bias against “me-searchers...researchers whose work is directly or indirectly relevant to their own identities or experiences." Open Access: doi.org/10.1177/0146...
“Me-searchers” study topics directly or indirectly relevant to themselves—such as social groups they belong to—and are often stigmatized as being more biased (though sometimes more informed) than those researching topics unrelated to their own experience. This study explores how queer and straight researchers are perceived when studying anti-queer bias or other topics through three pre-registered experiments (N = 823). When both studied anti-queer bias, the queer me-searcher was perceived as more biased, and the straight researcher was perceived as less informed than identical (straight and queer) researchers studying a different topic. Target researchers motivated by social justice (vs. theoretical) implications were also perceived as more biased. Crucially, we identified and tested three conceptual accounts about why and how me-searchers are stigmatized. Supporting the existence of me-search stigma, our results suggest that not only me-searchers but also allied researchers are stereotyped when studying prejudice and discrimination."

Can Violent Protest Change Local Policy Support? Evidence from the Aftermath of the 1992 Los Angeles Riot RYAN D. ENOS Harvard University
AARON R. KAUFMAN New York University, Abu Dhabi
MELISSA L. SANDS University of California, Merced
iolent protests are dramatic political events, yet we know little about the effect of these events on political behavior. While scholars typically treat violent protests as deliberate acts undertaken in pursuit of specific goals, due to a lack of appropriate data and difficulty in causal identification, there scant evidence of whether riots can actually increase support for these goals. Using geocoded data, we alyze measures of policy support before and after the 1992 Los Angeles riot - one of the mosthigh-profile events of political violence in recent American history — that occurred just prior to an election. Contrary to some expectations from the academic literature and the popular press, we find that the riot caused a marked liberal shift in policy support at the polls. Investigating the sources of this shift, we find that it was likely the result of increased mobilization of both African American and white voters. Remarkably, this mobilization endures over a decade later.
