As we enter a new quarter, time for an update on games industry layoffs. As you can see here we're well past 50k people known to be impacted since 2020 in over 800 incidents. with 3 months to go, 2026 could end as the worst year on record. 55% of known layoff waves in 2026 have unknown headcounts.

Tech people like this have always had a deep-rooted disdain for artists and musicians. 20 years ago many of my coworkers at Google had no qualms about pirating indie games, and seperately I remember one of them saying (regarding game dev) "if your algorithms are good enough you don't need artists"

I've said this before: when a big company like Sony buys a studio, they don't actually want the studio. They want the studio's IP, and they'll deliberately discard every aspect of that IP that costs money to maintain, until all that remains is a salable asset in a portfolio that requires no upkeep.

Ending development and laying everyone off at roughly the same time at least carries the acknowledgement that the game doesn't exist without the people who made it. This comes off as leadership saying, "now we can exploit this IP in peace without all those annoying employees always asking for pay."
