Why do people feel repugnance toward transactions that profit off others’ misfortune without causing it (eg prediction markets for disasters)? Research by @benleoecon.bsky.social et al suggests people primarily object to profit-making tied to others' outcomes: buff.ly/VGcxwPK

Thirteen years ago today, I donated a kidney to a stranger, starting a chain w/ 6 recipients. It felt like a great deal: with modest risks, I could give someone many more years of healthy life. Looking back, I'm glad I did it, but I understated both the risks and the benefits. 🧵

We show using DOSE elicitation on representative sample that about half of the US is loss-tolerant, not loss averse. Importantly, this measure correlates with reported gambling and investing behavior so likely not a figment of our method. @cfcamerer.bsky.social academic.oup.com/restud/advan...
