Can you REALLY tell the difference between AI-generated and human-written text? One of these texts was written by a human and another by a well-prompted chatbot. Which is which?:

This isn't an answer to your question, but a strong relationship between desireableness and credence would make sense if we adopt an RL view of desireableness. A surprising positive result is more reinforcing than an unsurprising one.

I can’t find a dictionary definition that references mathematics being plural. Usually it says it’s “a field of study…” Similar for economics.
110
Benjamin Henke @handle.invalid · 26/01/2025
I was wondering about that. Not sure. People definitely talk about stats class. But it doesn’t strike me as that odd that statistics might be the study of how to measure statistics (plural).
110
Benjamin Henke @handle.invalid · 26/01/2025
What am I wrong about? The claim that mathematics isn’t plural just as economics isn’t?
100
Benjamin Henke @handle.invalid · 26/01/2025
Also, this profound point is an example of the benefit of using LLMs in philosophy.
000
Benjamin Henke @handle.invalid · 26/01/2025
Gymnastics: gym Statistics, by contrast, plausibly is a plural, and so is shortened to “stats” (and anyway, many uses of the latter are clearly plural).
200
Benjamin Henke @handle.invalid · 26/01/2025
I don’t follow. My claim (and that’s about all it is) is that mathematics isn’t a plural, so the short form shouldn’t be either. For comparison: Economics: econ Do you call it “econs”?
210
Benjamin Henke @handle.invalid · 26/01/2025
Exactly. So “ethics” isn’t really the plural of “ethic”. Similarly, “mathematics” isn’t the plural of “mathematic”. And the shortened for of the former is “math,” not “maths”. QED
110
Benjamin Henke @handle.invalid · 26/01/2025
But thinking of “mathematics” as plural only makes sense if you think there’s a valid use of the singular…

Our 2yo daughters have started repeating our swearing. My wife recently told our daughters that what she'd actually said was 'beef' and that she shouldn't have said it. Hours later, when we were leaving their room after putting them down, they both simultaneously said 'night night beef' and giggled.
