Really happy to see this video article published. Thanks to @theorymeg.bsky.social for her incredible feedback and encouragement throughout! This is public-facing scholarship but I still wanted to raise some serious questions about the way jazz theory is done. I hope you enjoy it!

I haven't listened to the Miles Davis second quintet in a while (big mistake). Sometimes you start to think, could it really be as good as what I remember of it? Listening to ESP and the answer is, yes, it's that good, it's as good as any music ever made.

Recently discovered that the easiest way to add a table in Word is to type it out with tabs to separate columns, select it, and choose "convert text to table"... in case that will add years onto anyone else's life.

Highly recommend this reflective essay from Temple Prof. Seth Bruggeman. It captures the central challenge of teaching today in a system that over time has become entirely transactional, and then suddenly technology that could satisfy the transaction arrived. www.insidehighered.com/opinion/view...

I've been animated! I teach my students to move their hands as a kinesthetic to identify operations on intervals caused by accidentals - grow, shrink, or shift. This student was taking an exam in the library when other people saw her moving her hands, and thought she was doing magic.
A hand drawn cartoon with four panels. The upper left depicts a student with a question mark above her head with the words "test taking" and music symbols. The lower left shows the same student solving an interval question with one hand above the other, with a thought bubble pointing to the upper right, where I am represented in the same pose in a music classroom. I am bald, face-masked, and bespectacled (it's very accurate). In the lower right others notice the student's hand motions and have speech bubbles: "Is she casting a spell?" "Music theory test maybe?" And the student thinks "Yeah, yeah, it's magic to get correct answers."

As a curator, I hear Bahamian musicians often complain that local live audiences only care to listen to what’s familiar or the Top 40, but I’d say that the reason our audiences are at times intolerant of anything that verges out of the mainstream is that we as artists haven’t stuck to our guns.

I cooked turkey parts - the best decision I’ve ever made. (1) cheaper (2) more appropriate amount of food (3) more surface area for dry brine and sear (4) more control and even cooking in oven (5) so much easier to carve. I could go on.

What are the considerations around deleting vs. going private on the other place? Is there a real risk of people taking my handle and posing as me? If I'm private is there a real risk of my information being used nefariously by the company? Do they not already have that info?
