Sandwiches are one of those things where the best ones are some of life's great experiences but everything up to that point is trash

We got a fancy hotel room as a treat and the bath is so massive I can actually fit in it and I'm reading a book in the warm in the bath with a beautiful view and honestly is there anything better

Ah yeah, anatomy of existence is fun. And definitely some bangers in the later Arcadion stages. But it's a bit thin otherwise

The Dawntrail OST is finally on streaming, and it's a reminder that it really isn't Soken's best work... A few standout tracks like the Heritage Found zone themes and the the night themes for Yak T'el and Urqopacha, but so much of it is annoying or forgettable after a run of absolute bangers

I loved it when it first aired, tried to rewatch a few years back and found some aspects of it self-consciously "dark", although I wonder if another rewatch would render some of that into camp

Hannibal is great!! The start is very hit and miss but by the end of the first season it's hit its stride, and it gets better and better until the end

I even think there was a version of Starfleet Academy that could've worked. Such a fun premise and cast but the episodes were wayyyy too long, and it had a lot of the same quality issues

Ben 🇵🇸 @bencriley.bsky.social · 03/09/2026

Picard had its moments, I even think the much derided second season was really great. As fun as season 3's TNG reunion was I wish they kept the fantastic ensemble they'd spent 2 seasons building up. I hope Lower Decks is remembered as the great Trek of this era.

Ben 🇵🇸 @bencriley.bsky.social · 03/09/2026

I was never a fan of Discovery, but a similar thing happened where everything about it got worse and worse. The first season had a lot of bizarre (and imo, bad) choices but at least was competently executed, by season 3 it was unwatchable.

110

Ben 🇵🇸 @bencriley.bsky.social · 03/09/2026

Strange New Worlds started out so strong but it has absolutely flatlined in quality. Last season started really strong and just got steadily worse throughout. Rough when something diminishes in quality not because of specific choices but because everything about the execution generally gets worse.

The lore drops in the latest chapter of Firmament in Fallen London are **so cool** and I have no one to talk to about them. Of all my favourite things Fallen London is the toughest sell to other people, in part because part of the joy of it is having spent many years in its living, changing world.

Dolly Parton on trans rights. God I loved her.

When looking at the issue of anti-trans legislation, Parton said that “I try to get into the human element of it.” Pointing out that she has people in her life who identify as queer and trans, the 77-year-old star said it was important to hear what they’re saying.

“I know and love them all, and I do not judge. And I just see how broken-hearted they get over certain things and I know how real they are,” she said. “I know how important this is to them. That’s who they are. They cannot help that any more than I can help being Dolly Parton, you know, the way people know me. If there’s something to be judged, that is God’s business. But we are all God’s children and how we are is who we are.”

Oh!! I'm definitely more of a Marvel guy, but there were some amazing Batman runs in the time I was reading a lot of comics. And anything by Grant Morrison!! Lanterns were under Geoff Johns' leadership in that period though, and while I enjoy his early Flash stuff I'm generally not a fan

Ben 🇵🇸 @bencriley.bsky.social · 10/08/2026

I hugely regret getting rid of most of my comics a little over a decade ago, but I was a renter and felt like I was having to move house every couple of years, I couldn't keep lugging all those short boxes around. I've still got about six boxes left, kept a lot of good stuff but I had so much!!

FWIW Hickman's Secret Wars is the pinnacle for me, but I also love Final Crisis. Both great examples of huge, messy stories that build on years of continuity scattered across multiple books.

Phenomenal thread, and a real nostalgia trip for me. I was an obsessive comics reader in my 20s (from roughly 2007-2017) and read a lot of big 2 events in that time! The thing I have always loved about comics is how high the threshold for weirdness is in the most mainstream examples of the form.

It's so easy to be cynical about queer culture but when you find the right bits, we have access to utopia!! I feel very lucky to know amazing queers and get to go dancing with them and generally be trashbags together!! Sometimes I forget that people are **lonely** out there!!
