We don't always say what we want to say We don’t always say what we mean Even time loses its way Sky changes and so do we light grants supernatural clarity Though at times memory slips into storm grey to forget #PoetsofDoom #Sky #poetsofbluesky #poetrysky #Photography #WCK #ECK 💙📷 me

Where do souls go at life’s end Perhaps only a boatman can say Perhaps only Charon knows the way to an isle of transition A restful place with no decisions Island of the dead isn’t vindictive only Cypress trees glass seas and light #vss365 #ipoetrysky #Emoetry #poetsofbluesky #ECK 🎨 Böcklin

Arnold Böcklin
The Island of the Dead, 1883
(Die Toteninsel) Version 3

The Island of the Dead is the most well known painting of Swiss Symbolist artist Arnold Böcklin (1827–1901).

Description:
A boatman ferries a lone figure garbed in white to a rocky island with gorgeous Cypress trees, surrounded by glass-like waters.

Böcklin provided no public explanation as to the meaning of the painting but described it as a 'dream picture.'

The title was coined by art dealer Fritz Gurlitt in 1883.

Not knowing the painting's history, some observers interpret the oarsman as the boatman Charon, who ferried souls to the underworld in Greek mythology. The water, either River Styx or the River Acheron.

Vanquish the myth A false tale of sin Involving an ancient apple What nonsense! Only spineless sycophants Ring-kissing miscreants Accept the abuse And subjugation of women #vss365 #inkMine #OurPoetryX #poetsofbluesky #blueskypoets #PaintbyWords #EastCoastKin #poetrysky #writesky #ECK 🎨Magritte

Renee Magritte
The Son of Man, 1964
Oil on Canvas
Private Collection

Magritte painted it as a self-portrait.

The painting is of Magritte in an overcoat and a bowler hat standing in front of a low wall, beyond which are the sea and a cloudy sky.

Magritte’s face is almost obscured by a green apple. However, his eyes can be seen peeking over the edge of the apple.

At the edge of a pond, a forest with trees reflected in the blue water, and whose leaves begin to take on the colors of autumn.
