Absolutely extraordinary. The Democrats conceded *nothing* and got everything they demanded. They said no ICE/CBP funding, and that's precisely what happened. In other words, they did not cave. At all. But the GOP did—completely.

The Callais ruling is the latest evidence that the real problem with #SCOTUS is that it can do whatever it wants without any fear of pushback from Congress. The way to fix that is by making the Court *accountable* again, something that expanding it or imposing term limits won't actually accomplish:

Bonus 223: "They Are Who We Thought They Were"
The Callais ruling has prompted renewed calls for Court reform. It's also a reminder of why the most popular proposals *aren't* how we should fix the Court.

The Supreme Court and GOP are about to make redistricting a complete mess nationwide. It’s going to become pure tit for tat. Some seats flip red, some flip blue, and by the time the dust settles everything just evens out. But the whole country will be gerrymandered in the process.

Unfortunately, this piece on The Great Resegregation has aged well. www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...
If the Great Resegregation proves successful, it will restore an America past where racial and ethnic minorities were the occasional token presence in an otherwise white-dominated landscape. It would repeal the gains of the civil-rights era in their entirety. What its advocates want is not a restoration of explicit Jim Crow segregation—that would shatter the illusion that their own achievements are based in a color-blind meritocracy. They want an arrangement that perpetuates racial inequality indefinitely while retaining some plausible deniability, a rigged system that maintains a mirage of equal opportunity while maintaining an unofficial racial hierarchy. Like elections in authoritarian countries where the autocrat is always reelected in a landslide, they want a system in which they never risk losing but can still pretend they won fairly.

it is racial discrimination to try ensure that the representation of a minority group is roughly in line with its proportion of the state’s population. it is equal protection to allow a state to obliterate a minority group’s representation.

The "reactionary colorblindess" of the right-wing justices has reached its logical conclusion in finding that it is racist NOT to let Louisiana—and any other state for that matter—discriminate on the basis of race in voting. (gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
What we can expect in the aftermath of this ruling is for more Republican-controlled states to implement discriminatory maps and call them partisan so they can pass legal muster. In practical terms, this will likely mean fewer nonwhite representatives in Congress. Diminishing the power of minority voters may also allow the Republican Party to continue on its path from reactionary color-blindness to more overt racism, safe in the assumption that it will not have to answer to constituents who oppose such racism because they are its targets. There is little risk in attacking people who lack the power to remove you from office.

Tweet from Tennessee Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn:
“I urge our state legislature to reconvene to redistrict another Republican seat in Memphis. It's essential to cement

’s agenda and the Golden Age of America.

I've vowed to keep Tennessee a red state, and as Governor, I'll do everything I can to make this map a reality.”

The practical result of adding the sum rev from yesterday to today's decision in Callais seems to be that use of race in partisan gerrymandering is permitted (because hard to prove it was race, not politics) *unless* the state is doing it to remedy a VRA violation. This is Bizarro 14th Amendment.

This:is 💯 correct. The vast majority of Section 2 litigation (and settlements made under the threat of litigation) have been at the local level. Callais will gut minority representation in city councils, county supervisors, and school boards across the county.

The FCC's genuine argument is that ABC's flimsy diversity practices are somehow discriminatory against white people, and this nonexistent discrimination against white people violates the Communications Act that's completely insane and baseless yet it's framed as a serious inquiry
"However, the FCC, the federal entity that regulates the media and telecommunications industry, began investigating Disney’s stations last March for possible violations of the Communications Act of 1934 and the FCC’s rules regarding its prohibition on unlawful discrimination.

Since beginning its investigation, the FCC said that “Disney’s ABC has purported to respond” to two inquiries. Still, the agency said that it has determined further action was “appropriate."
