I don’t think that my follower audience needs to be told that this is a very bad thing. If this happens, we will bleed researchers to other countries. Probably a lot to China. I’d personally go to Mexico. We will quickly and dramatically fall behind the rest of the world on yet another metric.

I’m very sad today. The proposed alternative to these majors is “social and cultural analysis”, which isn’t a thing. It also DEFINES nonwhite and/or non-cishet men as literally deviant from normal. This is at UT-Austin. We’re a “public Ivy” and a giant R1 school. It can happen to you too.

If you can’t articulate a really good, evidence-based reason why something is “unprofessional”, you’re probably being racist or sexist without realizing it. One more reason why dress code shouldn’t cover anything but safety. Closed-toe shoes in a hospital? Yes. Policing hair color? No.
