5 journalists are dead and the NYT decides to write a smear piece depicting Al Jazeera as a Hamas mouthpiece. AJ is far from perfect & deserves as much scrutiny & criticism as many others. But the timing & one-sidedness of the article is an effort to legitimise the killing of AJ’s staff.

Army returned yesterday to arrest more people. now 19 Palestinians, family, and community members of Awdah are in jail. The army refuses to return the body unless there is a quiet burial and no public mourning and the burial is outside of the village. Murderer still at home. Cruelty is the point

Two days ago, a settler murdered Awdah Hathaleen in his village. That settler then told the army which other Palestinians to arrest, including Awdah’s family. Last night, the army raided the village and arrested more family members. The murderer is at home by the way.

The US asks Hamas to accept a 60 day ceasefire on the basis of vague commitment to end the war. The US is unwilling to push Netanyahu to withdraw IDF from Rafah (current sticking point in the negotiations). Hard to believe the US would be willing to stop Israel from restarting the war in 60 days.

And, when given a choice btwn a full deal ending the war and freeing all the hostages vs. a 'multiphase' deal (60-day ceasefire only, only 10 living hostages freed, no Israeli commitment not to resume fighting), 74% of Israeli respondents chose the former, only 8% the latter.

Without direct US military intervention, or a diplomatic breakthrough, Israel will soon exhaust its targets, and may find itself in an open ended attrition war. The war on Iran is still very popular in Israel, and the question is for how long.

What we are seeing in Israel’s decision is a state who has immense power but has lost control. The Israeli govt is near collapse every few months, there are no real military wins in Gaza in the eyes of the Israeli public, and so the state is trying to re-create control by force
