When I was a kid in peewee hockey, I scored a goal on my own team's net by mistake but i think this guy might have me beat.
A Yankees fan gets escorted out after interfering with a home run by a Yankees player, which ultimately led to the Yankees losing a third game in a row to Tampa Bay.

The 'what he actually meant was' people, even the left leaning well meaning ones, got this terribly wrong.

on October 7, a chunk of my family were nearly wiped out. my teenage cousin had been here in Toronto for my sister's wedding, we sent him back, and two days later the attack happened. the kubbitz my family is from was attacked, but there had been just enough forewarning.

My thoughts on the 700+ LLM papers on math and mathematical physics is less concern that LLMs can replace me and more concern that everyone from leaders to the population at large is willing to pretend that LLMs can replace me because "stop supporting research" seems have worldwide appeal.

The research posted in this thread is nearly 4 years old, and homeless populations change fairly quickly, so maybe things changed since the last presidential election.

The 1978 remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers deserves to be in the same conversation as The Thing and The Fly when it comes to providing new angles to the story. A pod people sci-fi/horror for a generation experiencing post-Watergate paranoia.

Part of why I don't like the AI-or-bust economy is the constant flopsweat of people on the news who say this HAS to work. Quit making everyone so anxious. Goddamn. If this is the next Google then why are you acting like this? I don't remember being told to buy an iPhone at gunpoint.

So in my mind I remember it as typical Verdi (in the vein of ballo or trovatore) as opposed to otello and Falstaff, (which I think of as half belonging to Shakespeare with verdi shedding all the hoary old Italian conventions). But yes, he absolutely did write three Shakespeare operas 🙂

beaudreadful.bsky.social @beaudreadful.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Right, I forgot. But in my defense Macbeth is a far more traditional structure with the Shakespeare plot pasted on to it, while the other two were composed later and are more through-composed.

but really, this post is just me reaffirming that I am not interested in whether they can do math because the primary function of LLMs is to help centralize, justify, and validate power, and they are doing that successfully already

Zombie fiction is, at its core, about the fear of seeing your own body age and decay. Ghost stories are about the impossibility of grappling with the past. Vampires are about what if you got so horny you died

Traviata is almost entirely people at parties plus music. The main Mozart operas offer a lot more plot, if that's what you're looking for.

The Reasonable AI Centrists are becoming as irritating as the cultists. Yes, we can grant the premise that it's "sort of useful for some things". That doesn't make ANY of this actually worth it.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

I also saw Tender Loving Care tonight, and if this is Mike Leigh's final movie, as he says it likely is, what a high note on which to end a singular and utterly distinguished writing-directing careers. This one starts as amiable, even cheerful "minor" Leigh, then sneaks up and guts you. >

It's too depressing and obnoxious to write about, but virtually all of the doomy/horny AI hyperventilating is transparently displaced anxiety about our fucked climate and political situation. Even rich idiots know it's bad and being permitted to get worse. They're trying to write their own ending.
