After Eric Schmitt lied and was corrected at the Jack Smith hearing, the NY Times called it a “misunderstanding.” This might be fair if Schmitt had a record of honesty (he doesn’t) and if Schmitt didn’t repeat the same lie after the hearing (he did). What the hell is the NY Times doing?

Reporting from Washington
Jack Smith, who as special counsel twice charged Donald J. Trump with criminal offenses after his first term, defended his actions in testimony before Congress on Tuesday, as a Republican senator accused him of perjury based on what appeared to be the lawmaker’s misunderstanding about a basketball game involving the University of Iowa Hawkeyes.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but a country with a masked national police force which partners with countless local police forces to yank people off the street, disappear them into a detention gulag, and render them to overseas prisons without due process is not actually a safe country.

I love the optimism about Dems winning in November - I share it! And: I'm a tiny bit nervous that winning will free folks of the urgency to fix deeper structural problems in our party that will fuck us in the long-haul if we don't grapple with them.

Andy Beshear has an entire chapter in his new book about backing the LGBTQ community and it's worth a read. He talks about how the anti-trans ads were tested in KY during his election and how vetoing anti-trans legislation didn't hurt his reelection campaign.
However the anti-trans ads had less to do with Kentucky and more to do with the fact that we were in an election. Terry Schilling, the head of the APP, decided to test the ads in our election to determine whether or not the issue could win votes for the Republican Party. Earlier in the summer of 2019, Scholling had partnered with a behavioral science firm to try to find a wedge issue that resonated with suburban voters. That's right. The anti-trans ads did not come out of some firmly held conviction but was a purely political stance. Their research landed on trans athletes, specifically trans women, competing in women's sports. They tested their theory in the 2019 Kentucky gubernatorial general election. Although I won, APP considered their test successful, because their research showed the ads delivered thirteen thousand votes for Trump Lite, which made the race tighter than anticipated. You might hask how, in this political climate, I was reelected after vetoing the anti-trans bill. Because people respect authentic faith. The day I vetoed it, I explained my why. I said I believe all children are children of God and that I don't want people picking on these kids. I then countered their anti-trans ads with commercials talking about good jobs, healthcare, roads and bridges, public education, and public safety. The result? The biggest win of my career. So don't tell me the Democratic Party should stop fighting for the rights of all people. Just explain your authentic why, and then get back to focusing on issues that touch all our lives on a daily basis.

Elections—and our fate—rely on convincing the “gettable” middle. They are, by definition, fickle and fair weather. This means that the baked brain segment WILL get them in predictable cycles. We’re about to get them right now, but we should know by now that we will not keep them for long.

It's frustrating because everything you need to understand Trump you can get from watching him for 5 minutes. It's all right there. The falsehoods are just an extremely predictable outgrowth of it. It's just that the media shies away from clearly stating *what kind of person he is*.

Which came first: Fox News or it’s audience? This chicken-and-egg question begs asking bc we tend to blame Fox (with reason!) for baking people’s brains, but one could easily argue the brains were already baked, and Fox just served up like any other mirror would. Nixon was a thing. And Jim Crow.

"A demagogue who hijacked American democracy, just as the nation’s founders feared would happen, is devolving into a mad king before our eyes:"
This is exactly why the time to sound the alarm is now, and not Nov. 10 or Jan. 3 when undoing irrational and unlawful moves by the White House will be much, much harder. Look, TV punditry and newspaper analyses that stop pretending the president is a well man, or newspaper editorials calling for his resignation, or leaders in Congress backing impeachment won’t end the crisis...today.

But calling attention now to Trump’s gross unfitness to hold office will set the stage for the battles to come — moving the Overton window on what can be done to restore democracy and helping any sensible Republicans understand there’s still a way to save both themselves and the country before it’s too late.

The right words matter, a lot. We need to start urgently looking for them.
