I know this is obvious to everyone who follows me who's played arcade games longer than me, but I'm genuinely stunned at just how systemic is the widespread ignorance, incuriosity, and intellectual dishonesty regarding arcade design (and bmups in particular).

"you have to hit yourself" is at least as old as the April 2003 EGM. full page archive.org/details/elec... not proud of my ability to vaguely recall reading something in a magazine 20 years ago, but here we are
Final Fantasy Il features a unique experience system we would need pages and pages to explain. Instead, here's a quick hint to build up your hit points (we also suggest visiting www.gamefaqs.com for a more in-depth guide): Enter a battle with a weak group of enemies and wallop them until there's only one left. Now, turn on your own party, hitting them until less than half their hit points are left. Finally, finish off that last enemy. If you did it right, your characters' maximum hit points should go up.

There's a couple news stories along the lines of "Microsoft Patents Awful Gaming Thing." Big tech companies file as many patents as possible, including for items they have zero intention of ever making. This is done chiefly to create a defensive arsenal of patents so they can counter-sue others.

Starbucks is trying to save the company by bringing back chairs. app.ft.com/content/8d38...
Starbucks is betting $1bn that an environment with leather armchairs, rugs and hardback books can lure back customers willing to buy one of its $6 lattes and perhaps linger long enough to have another.

The world’s biggest coffee shop chain is making the investment so that as many as 9,000 cafés feel more like a “community lounge”, even serving as an oasis for “lonely and disconnected” lives lived online.

The aesthetic jettisons design austerity that followed the Covid-19 pandemic and contrasts with strategies of fast-growing rivals such as Dutch Bros, 7 Brew and Luckin Coffee, which sell beverages from small shops with few to zero chairs.

Digital painting of Kurapika and Leorio from the anime Hunter x Hunter in a subway train. Kurapika is reading a big newspaper as Leorio looks over his shoulder at it and gestures with his hand. Kurapika looks troubled. The newspaper says something like “Phantom Troupe in Yorknew”. Behind them are random other passengers in the train, sitting with their eyes closed or also reading a copy of the paper. The colors are greenish and suggest artificial lighting.

Rogue and Gambit in the style of influential shoujo manga artists like Moto Hagio. This one's about Rogue's desire to be a "normal girl"Ren & Stimpy style Rogue & Gambit. Gambit does a big Tex Avery awooga over Rogue, Rogue slaps him and yells DON'T TOUCH ME. A time when cartoon directors straight up went out and told their adult fans "hey, our target audience is children, set your expectations accordingly" lmao
Beast wars

DiTillio — May 4, 1996

Dear Transformers fans:

I have read with interest all your praises and brickbats on the pilot episodes of beast wars. Thanks.

I'd like to make one point clear - The target audience of the show is children from, about 5 to 10 years of age. As much as we like all you older fans to watch and hopefully like what we do, you aren't the target audience. So to refer back to years of continuity from the old show and the comic books for an audience that very likely has NO notion of that continuity would be a disservice to them.

Yahoo, the internet’s ‘OG’, wants to win over Gen Z www.ft.com/content/50c6...
Text: Yahoo wants to convince a new generation of users that one of the internet’s oldest services can be one of the new AI winners, with the Apollo-backed company seeking to develop its brand alongside the launch of an in-house AI tool and consumer products.

Chief executive Jim Lanzone told the FT that the company’s heritage gave it credibility with younger users not alive when it launched in 1994 in a “vintage way”. He described Yahoo as the internet’s “OG” — a slang term meaning “original gangster”.

Now I am thinking about that time in 2017 when I paid 27000 yen (which was about $250 USD then) for that 4 AAA battery operated Fist of the North Star e-ink reader. Despite this ludicrous design meant to stop piracy, it was ripped immediately. Here is an example of Tokyo Otaku Mode's translation QC:
A page from the Progress Technologies eOneReader English language version of chapter 224 of Fist of the North Star, covering stories they never bothered to animate. Much of the final volumes were translated by "Tokyo Otaku Mode" (no individual translator name given, in contrast to the earlier volumes).

The most relevant area of this page is Kenshiro scolding two guys by saying (and this is exactly how it's spelled and written on the page) "You were so spoiled by your father's love...that you forgot his addection, and become blinded by ambition!!"

Not "affection." Not "became." The list of Kickstarter backers for the Fist of the North Star eOneBook, included at the very end. I've circled my own name in red.

for the last year I have read every post on the NYC Wedding subreddit and none of them have been as hateful as "I teach clown at Circus Academy, and what you're looking for is a children's entertainer and face painter, not a clown."
Screenshot of reddit post titled "ISO a clown for my wedding". Text of post reads: As title states, I'm looking for some good clown recommendations!

I would like to hire a clown that wears a red nose / dresses up as a traditional clown and can do face painting and maybe some other stuff like juggling, miming, some tricks and just overall have a good clownish time. Looking to hire this clown for an hour or two for my wedding on October 23rd. Ideally under $600 for a couple of hours.

I've looked online for clowns in NYC but have no idea how to tell if they're actually good so i've come to reddit looking for answers! Please send over any clowns you've hired that you've been happy with - no artsy comedy collective clowns/comedians.

If there are any other subreddits you think I should post this to, lmk!Screenshot of reply: I teach clown at Circus Academy New York, and what you're looking for is a children's birthday party entertainer and face painter, not a clown. You'll be best off hiring from companies that specialize in children's entertainment. Unfortunately, I don't personally have connections to face painters and children's entertainment, but I'm replying so you use the right keywords in your Google search. If you search for "traditional" clowns in NYC, you're more likely to end up with people like me, what you're calling "artsy" or "comedy" clowns, because clowning as an art is much older than when people started face painting kids in the 1970s. Famous examples of the style are Charlie Chaplin or Ed Wynn, you may also get actual commedia dell'Arte from the 16th century. That's because NYC also has a thriving theatre and circus and burlesque scene, all of which use traditional (1500s - 1800s) clowning, so the search results for "traditional" clown slant heavily in that directio
