If a rule needs a flowchart, a spreadsheet, and three specialized dice to resolve a basic action, it's over-designed. Elegance unlocks depth. Simple or crunchy? #ttrpg #5e #dnd #GameDesign

Renaissance painters used to add gratuitous guinea pigs to scenes because they were exotic New World fauna. The same wonder at the new was behind this line in Hamlet: “There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.” Like …GUINEA PIGS, Horatio!

I remember the first time people were excited about VR back in the 1990s Spending a day working in a headmount in 1994 disabused me of the notion that it was the wave of the future. The same overhype stink clings to AI right now.

Roddenberry called TOS “Hornblower in Space”. Star Trek has always borrowed plots from the Age of Sail.

This piece of the puzzle isn't talked about nearly enough. I am willing to bet it's not the kids who do their own homework who will be left behind in the future. The stans are screaming this because they need it to be true or they are proper fucked.

Intermittent wall socket failure is a WiFi issue I’ve never encountered before, but that’s our current working hypothesis. Surprisingly it wasn’t Spectrum’s fault.

Environmental storytelling! Every week the trash men drag the dumpsters to the curb for the truck to empty. This week they all have new yellow caution tape. What happened last week?!

It’s a nice trick to have up your sleeve when you really need to ship. Gameplay kind of dull? Add a timer as a low-risk fix!

If a challenge is too easy, a cheap way to make it harder is to add time pressure. Most game timers aren’t artistic attempts to evoke anxiety, they’re just quick fixes for broken mechanics.

I have six rules of game design: 1. Choice - the player makes decisions. 2. Variety - the decisions change over time. 3. Consequence - the player’s choices must matter. 4. Predictability - consequences are knowable. 5. Uncertainty - but not perfectly. 6. Satisfaction - frustration is temporary.

as it is right now, AI companies literally cannot afford the data centers they've already signed for and bought the land for lol, they're all currently defaulting on all that right now. How the fuck are they going to afford the data centers for more? exponentially? it's nonsensical, it's unrealistic

I'm convinced this is true. The amount of clearly LLM automated unsolicited messaging I now receive on every communication channel is something I've complained about before. It honestly feels like being stalked, but I think it's just what happens when your contact info makes it into an agent swarm.

What they mean when they say these things is "I need the government to make it illegal to compete with me", it has nothing to do with actual harms caused by these companies. They want to divert anti-AI sentiment into vague concern about fake sci-fi bullshit.
