Three panel comic. Panel 1: a high school basketball game. The home team is down 9 points, and some players are looking discouraged on the bench. The coach points to a player just out of frame and says, “flippers, you’re in!” Panel 2: the away team attempts a deep 2-point shot, possibly to beat the buzzer, which is blocked by Flippers, a whale who doesn’t even have his arms up. Panel 3: the game ends and the home team excitedly crowd around Flippers, who won them the game. A player from the away team looks stunned, with his hands on his head.

11/ The bottom line is that the benefits continue to outweigh the risks when it comes to the Covid vaccine, especially if you're 65 or older. If you haven't already, now is a great time to book your Covid vaccine. After some bumps in the road, the vaccine should now be widely available.

Ballpoint pen, copic marker, & a bit of crayon. A fully grown man is in a tree fort high above the ground. A pack of river beavers have circled the tree and are beginning to chomp. He pleads with the beavers. “Beavers,” he says. “Let’s talk. I can get you logs.” It’s doubtful that a deal will be made. These beavers have had their sights set on this tree and there’s no guarantee that this man can deliver on his log promise. Big tree fall hard. Artist’s note: I like how the leaves turned out here.

Ballpoint pen on paper. A man in his PJs is tucked into his bed. He's upset because the bed has been lifted off the ground by a pack of small, mischievous creatures. We can only see 9 of them in the image but there are likely many more since they're all working together to lift the heavy bed frame. As the creatures run with the bed they chant, "hup hup hup hup hup hup hup hup hup." The man in the bed wants no part of this. "Put me down. No more hups," he says. It's unclear where they are going or what is happening. There is no punchline. There is little to no context. You're either with the hup team or you're out. Thank you for reading these.

Realizing the extent to which this is true wildly changed my opinions about how to deal with Trumpism, since they're never going to be satisfied unless they're actively dominating everyone else. You can't give them some concessions and go back to the status quo: they're reactionary revolutionaries.

There's a concept in international relations, specifically power transition theory, called a "revisionist state." Basically, the idea is that a revisionist state will tear down the whole international state system because they think it's unfair to them personally. Sound familiar?

Trying to manage these people as if they're standard participants in a multicultural democracy misses the point, because they have no interest in multicultural democracy or being one component of it; they want a system that treats them as a privileged class lording it over everyone else.

John C. Calhoun wasn't a conservative; he was a radical. Stephen Miller isn't a conservative; he's a radical. "Tradition" isn't a real thing that once existed and we can go back to, or something worth conserving, but an imaginary place that they'll destroy the current world to create.

satin ribbons

After unexpectedly winning her first blue ribbon for a sewn cape in 1981, Carol St. Clair Johnson developed an enduring love for the New Mexico State Fair. The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. The quilt earned Johnson yet another ribbon: Best in Category (miscellaneous quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.

The measles vaccine is one of the most effective medical therapeutics ever but can’t prevent 100% of infections bc that isn’t how vaccines work, & measles is *the most contagious* virus. For non-antivaxxers, your child can get an MMR at 6 months, and 1 dose is 93% effective at preventing infection.

A forest. A guy named Ted rides his ATV safely along a trail. Throughout the forest are joyful clowns doing clown antics. They’re not necessarily menacing, but Ted picks up a little speed all the same. The text reads: Ted wasn’t sure how he ended up in the Forest of The Clowns, but he was sure glad he wore the proper gear: boots, pants, long-sleeve shirt, gloves goggles and a helmet.
