What bird is this? 🤔 (See alt text for clue and photo credit) 🌎 #whatbird | #birdsoftheworld | #birds 🦉🐧🦆🦩🦅🪿🦚
A photo of a medium-sized bird (27–30 cm / 10.5–12 in long) perched vertically on rough tree bark. The bird features a vibrant red patch on the back of its crown, a black forehead, and a long, sharp black beak pointing slightly upward. Its face and neck are light-coloured with fine black streaks, while its back and wings display a striking yellow-green plumage covered in dark black bars and spots.

Clue: Look closely at my back and chest! My name comes from the distinct, ladder-like black bars and spots pattern covering my olive-green plumage.

Fun Fact: Unlike many of its kind that spend almost all their time high up in trees, this South American species frequently hunts for food down on the ground, using its long beak to dig into soil and logs to feast on its favourite food: ants!

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

#Birder Joy: the golden-crowned sparrows who winter in my yard arrived ~2 weeks ago. I'm tickled that the single white-throated sparrow that's migrated with them the last 2 years is also back. It's so fun to recognize it as an individual bird & I love that they find my yard a welcoming habitat.

What bird is this? 🤔 (See alt text for clue and photo credit) 🌏 #whatbird | #birdsoftheworld | #birds 🦉🐧🦆🦩🦅🪿🦚
A side-profile photo of a relatively large and plump bird (36–43 cm / 14–17 in long) standing on a forest floor amidst ground litter and sparse green grass blades. The bird features a slate-grey back and wings, a whitish face with a pink eye-ring, dark red-pink legs, and a distinctive white "V" pattern bordered by dark grey on its chest, with black crescent spots along its lower belly.

Clue: This ground-dwelling eastern Australian native is famous for the bold, white "V" across its chest and its loud, repetitive "whoop-whoop" call that echoes through the forest!

Fun Fact: Creatures of Habit! These birds prefer walking over flying and will often tread the exact same pathways back and forth every day when traveling between their favourite feeding spots.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

Text on card: The Northern Grey-headed Sparrow (Passer griseus) is a sociable bird found across much of sub-Saharan Africa, from open woodland and savannah to villages, gardens and farmland. Its grey head, chestnut-brown back and pale underparts give it a subtle but distinctive appearance, with males and females looking much alike. Often seen hopping along the ground in pairs or small flocks, it feeds mainly on seeds and grain, supplementing its diet with insects. What bird is this? 🤔 (See alt text for clue and photo credit) 🌍 #whatbird | #birdsoftheworld | #birds 🦉🐧🦆🦩🦅🪿🦚
A medium-sized bird (36–42 cm / 14–17 in long) perches upright on a leafy branch against a soft, out-of-focus background. It features chestnut-brown wings, a streaked brown and white chest, a long dark tail, a prominent white stripe above its sharp red eye, and a slightly hooked black beak.

Clue: Look closely above my red eye for a striking white stripe and listen for my low, bubbling call echoing across the thickets, savannas, and wetlands of sub-Saharan Africa and the southwestern Arabian Peninsula!

Fun Fact: Unlike most of its kind, which are notorious nest parasites, this species builds its own messy, dome-shaped nest and raises its own chicks—with the male doing most of the egg incubation and chick feeding!

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

The upper body is a warm brown with darker colouring at the ends of the wing and tail. Its chest is creamy white, turning to white around the legs, and heavily marked with dark, arrow-shaped spots. The legs are a pale, pinkish colour.
The branch it is on comes up from the bottom, slightly left of centre. It branches out into five stubby branches at the top. It is dead and bare of bark with a clump of moss on one branch. The background is a uniform out of focus green.

What bird is this? 🤔 (See alt text for clue and photo credit) 🌏 #whatbird | #birdsoftheworld | #birds 🦉🐧🦆🦩🦅🪿🦚
A striking medium-to-large male bird (100–120 cm / 39–47 in long) perched on a grey rock. It displays vibrant iridescent green scales on its back, a brilliant golden-yellow and red rump, and a white hood with fine black striped patterns fanning around its head, along with long, barred tail feathers extending dramatically behind it.

Clue: Named after the wife of a Governor-General of India, this high-altitude Asian traveler is famous for its shimmering cape and dramatic, extra-long tail.

Fun Fact: Despite the male's vibrant, eye-catching plumage, these birds are surprisingly elusive in the wild, spending most of their time hiding in dense bamboo thickets in the mountain forests of southwestern China and Myanmar.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

Always amuses me to see a Moorhen climbing high up in a bush or tree, a far cry from their usual wading activities. I spotted this juv bird at WWT Llanelli last week and it’s perfect for today’s #birdOfTheDay theme of #waders. #birds #UKWildlife #birdsSeenIn2026 #birdsOfTheWorld #nature #wildlife
