if you were wondering how he only served 13 months in prison after raping multiple minors, it's because he served zero jail time for raping multiple minors. the only jail time he served was for financial crimes covering up sexually abusing children. he kept his congressional pension up to now

There is no way to reduce deportations without a substantial defunding of law enforcement in rural areas, who have long operated like a baronial class unto themselves.

the funny part about this is our foreign policy is so deranged it didn't even rise to the level of "revenge", we just killed millions of randos, engendered more salafism, got our brownshirt program off the ground, etc

(quote from the article) Salam’s piece illustrates one of the main tendencies that makes The Atlantic a bad magazine: its editors allow writers to make unsubstantiated claims, ignore contrary evidence, and use sloppy reasoning. As a magazine editor myself, I am appalled that nobody at the publication would even think to ask a writer to deal with the opposing arguments or provide actual evidence for the thesis of their piece.

I don't know if it was intentional in this sense but a diabolical part about it is "weird" is unassailably true (if understated) about the people who are have risen to shot-calling positions, and a borderline necessary realization towards understanding systemic issues.

On the *same day* the Cornell Seven drugged and raped Jane Doe, Cornell banned four students (including the President of Cornell JVP) from campus for three years for nonviolent, pro-Palestine protests. The same Cornell officials let the rapists off with apology essays.

I know they mean "problem" in a narrow amoral sense but even there it's mostly just late empire capitalism. The procurement, goals, policy, contracting, wars, "lessons learned", "alliances", graft, culture and, sure, politicians. Systemic issue.

It’s very simple and it’s been said over and over but I guess it needs saying continuously: if you deem one group too small to have equal rights you are enabling fascism, not fighting it. The people saying Dems are GREAT on trans rights are not paying attention and/or saying stuff like this.
Nichole Hiltz
The Democrats defend the Kennedy Center but not trans people.

maybe because defending everything about a super small minority of the population is not worth losing to fascists

Could have asked any halfway respectable person who followed stuff like this and known things were going to go real south from the get go. (Some of the analysts probably knew too they just tried/had to float a soothing outlook as long as they could.)

just astonishingly well put.
three posts by gillian branstetter:

NYT leadership is very self-conscious of the fact its audience is generally wealthy, liberal, and educated, so the paper often tries to expose them to ideas (no matter how reactionary) they presume their audience isn't seeing while simultaneously playing to their anxieties and vanities

Most of the NYT readership is not in danger of being "pro-Trump" and in fact find being
"anti-Trump" very important to their self-concept as "liberal," particularly when the
NYT then enflames their fears about things like campus protesters or trans kids. "I'm anti-Trump but..."

Being wealthy, prestigious, and self-assured in their own virtue, they have now been given permission to act on these reactionary ideas with the power they have all while still being assured of their own tolerance
