Pretending that education is just job training and that it should be stripped of all non-utilitarian elements is one of the worst ideas in the history of ideas. Acting like it's some kind of axiom we should be using to orient ourselves at the moment is disastrously wrong-headed.

Teaching students to avoid "bothering" their teachers stops learning in its tracks, undercuts essential social development, and trains kids not to seek help (from people) when they need it. Its sole function is to enable higher student-teacher ratios. @aft.org promoting this is sick and sickening.

THE POETS ARE DYING

It seems impossible
they seemed immortal.

Where are they going
if not to their next poems?

Poems that, like lives, make do
and make that doing do more--

holding a jolt like a newborn,
a volta turning toward a god-load

of grief dumped from some heaven
where words rain down

and the poet is soaked. Cold
to the bone, we've become. Thick-

headed, death-bedded, heartsick.
Poets. Flowers picked, candles wicked,

forgiving everyone they tricked.

Stop spreading this garbage about em dashes in ACTUAL EDITED PROSE OH MY GOD. Plenty of actual human beings know how to type em dashes! We’re called “writers” and “editors” — maybe you’ve heard of us?
Feline Feces (lib catturd)
@kitttenn.bsky.social

M dashes (the long dash) are a dead giveaway. LLMs love using them for some reason, while actual human beings have no idea how to type that into the computer.
They also love sets of three, overtly parallel structure, and impersonal writing.

“But if what I’m after is the story, the vibe, the suspense, I might be justified in feeling that I’d ‘read’ the book. Certainly, I’d be unlikely to seek out the unabridged version.” Not to gatekeep or whatever but you have not, in fact, read the book.

This article is going to turn me into the Joker. Literary style is not a puzzle you solve to get a little information treat 😩😩😩
But A.I. can also simplify: if you’re struggling with the opening of “Bleak House,” you can ask for it to be rewritten using easier, more modern English. “Gas looming through the fog in divers places in the streets, much as the sun may, from the spongey fields, be seen to loom by husbandman and ploughboy,” Dickens wrote. Claude takes a more direct path: “Gas lamps glow dimly through the fog at various spots throughout the streets, much like how the sun might appear to farmers working in misty fields.”

Any historians of the late British Empire on here? Can you suggest any sources on the of colonial governance in the 20s onwards? I read somewhere that with this retreat of the colonial state, private orgs took up the onus of services like public health. Does this sound right? Many thanks 🙏🏽
