Bari Weiss's censoring 60 Minutes in the name of "building trust" is of a coin with Peter Hans's imposing a pro-doxxing syllabus policy in the name of "rebuilding public trust." They are both the gaslighting actions of political operatives sent to destroy the institutions they lead.

Hans here says academic freedom is a bedrock principle, but that when the far right comes gunning for it, the UNC system's position is ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Which is it, President Hans? Where do you really stand? Are you a university leader, or another hatchet man? @aaup.org
Hans said in an interview on UNC-TV this week that the university will protect academic freedom. Academic freedom is “a bedrock principle embedded in the DNA of the university,” he said. “We’re committed to the freedom of our faculty to pursue knowledge without fear of censorship or punishment. That hasn’t changed, and it won’t change. What has changed, of course, is the political climate that we live in. And people being very critical of any teaching or research that they may not agree with.” Publishing syllabi is part of a national trend as conservative states have pushed for a closer view of public university courses and academic research projects. Public universities in Texas, Ohio, Indiana, Utah, Florida and Georgia have laws or policies requiring public posting of course syllabi.

I don't think NYT should know peace until they divulge the full chain of decision making that led to the laundering of Nazi propaganda against a leading anti-fascist politician the same day fascism was codified in Congress.

It would be tempting to find the “antisemitism panic” re Mamdani laughably absurd, & yet I’m reminded of the “DEI” & “trans panics.” The fact that ppl w power are able to say absurd things in public shld be understood instrumentally: as anti-democratic calls for state violence

Mr. Antiwar President has us inches away from a Civil War at home and a nuclear war abroad in defense of an ally that is starting random hot regional wars to detract from its ongoing genocide. I’m sure all of this will just naturally cool off.

Reminder that seven Democratic senators voted to confirm Kristi Noem and six Dem senators declined to vote either way. She was confirmed, 59-34. The good faith experiment is clearly over, and we need the Democratic senators who didn't stand against her nomination to be loud as hell right now.

College leadership is pathetic. What cowards. They're going to withhold the diploma of the valedictorian because he used his speech to condemn genocide? Great. Make a hero out of him. BTW - the kids gave him a standing ovation. www.nyu.edu/about/news-p...

The fact that this “fight” against antisemitism is carried out by actual antisemites would be mind boggling if it weren’t also so predictable (historically).

His stance on abortion and recent statements on it were abominable but probably par for the course for a pope. Otherwise, feeling similarly - I’m surprised at how sad I was to hear of his passing.

Has everyone in charge at Columbia simply lost their marbles? I really cannot wrap my mind around their dereliction of duty to their students. If my kid went there I would sure feel some kind of way.

Every single member of the Columbia administration should step down. Through their complicity and their cowardice, they've betrayed their faculty, their staff and most of all their students. There's no way they can lead that university in any meaningful sense from this point on.

Ursula le Guin, on the accusation that fantasy is an escape from reality
[“Fantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisoned by the enemy, don’t we consider it his duty to escape? The moneylenders, the know-nothings, the authoritarians have us all in prison; if we value the freedom of the mind and soul, if we’re partisans of liberty, then it’s our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people with us as we can.”]

I keep seeing this. Guys, their literal job is to figure out what to do. They are not helpless even if they are not the majority. I really hope we can stop treating some of the most powerful people in the world as helpless and without sentience.
