On a day when mega-rich, privileged and safe, Zia Yusuf, pledges to shove asylum seekers in detention centres (in Green constituencies), before forcibly deporting them, this is a v important read. These grim people are frauds. Exploiting ignorance and racism for votes. But only to enrich themselves.
My View
Ian Birrell
Farage and the fraud of populism
It always pays to follow the money in politics

Extract:

Farage… works hard to burnish a facade as standard-bearer for ordinary folks fighting a complacent establishment, polishing his everyman image with fags, flat cap and pints. Brexit, he declared, was a victory for "real people". Shrugging off this act of national self-harm, he returned to the political fray two years ago at the helm of Reform UK supposedly to speak up "for the ordinary, decent, hard-working people of this country".
Given this stance, it was curious to learn that this silver-tongued politician quietly pocketed 55m from a crypto billionaire called Christopher Harborne shortly before his surprise return. Farage had, after all, said he did not plan to stand as an MP; now polls suggest he stands on the threshold of Downing Street.
He claimed the sum was a gift to pay for his security after being rumbled by a Guardian journalist.
Yet it always pays to follow money in politics. And this cash highlights how the anti-elitist populism sold to voters is a fraud, a rebranding of hard-right, anti-state conservatism by the super rich and their fellow travellers.
Farage has long focused on leveraging his fame into a fortune while enjoying the largesse of ultra-wealthy people, despite claiming
"there's no money in politics".
His grifting has caused political hiccups, whether it was taking cash for appearances on the Kremlin's propaganda machinery Russia Today or side hustles such as recording customised messages for Cameo punters.
Now an unsavoury stench wafts from this "gift", which is being probed for possible investigation by the Electoral Commission after the Tories claimed it was an undeclared donation - Farage denies this. Harborne insists he wants nothing in return. Yet it is hard not to wonder why a tycoon based in Thailand - where he goes under the name Chakrit Sakunkrit
- has handed an astonishing £17M to Reform UK and its leader… I met many American voters during his campaigns seduced by the idea that this self serving hustler was driven by desire to serve his nation and drain the Washington swamp. They have been rewarded with chaos, alleged corruption and a cost of living crisis fuelled by a foolish war. Aides claim his team - with the richest cabinet in United States history and a dozen billionaires - are "patriotic outsiders" even as the system gets tilted even more in favour of this elite and its interests.

Not a statesman. Not strong. Not patriotic. Not principled. Farage is a traitorous little shit who is too compromised and too desperate to please Trump, to serve the best interests of our country. He will only ever betray us because he has to see Brexit through to the bitter, broken end. (iPaper)
Farage Trump's comments 'not quite fair'

Nigel Farage distanced himself from Donald Trump yesterday, describing the US President's comments about British soldiers in Afghanistan as "not quite fair"
The Reform UK leader has called Trump a "genuine friend of the United Kingdom". This week, he said that the world would be a "better, more secure place" if America took over Greenland.
But Farage (inset) has now said that he would
"politely" object to Trump's claims that Nato troops stayed away from the front line.
Writing in a post on X, Farage said: "Donald Trump is wrong.
For 20 years our Armed Forces fought bravely alongside America's in Afghanistan."
Speaking in Davos, he added: "We stayed by America for the whole 20 years, we proportionately spent the
same money, we lost the same number of lives as America, pro-rata.
The same applies to Denmark... so it is not quite fair."
The Liberal Democrat leader, Sir Ed Davey, said: " I question the character of British politicians who've been supporting Donald Trump.
"I think Nigel Farage's character is on the line, along with Donald Trump's."

Robert Jenrick: an apology. thecritic.co.uk/fran...
Ishould begin with an apology. Last month, I described Robert Jenrick as “the most shameless man in parliament”. His office complained at the time, but I was stubborn and refused to back down. Well, it’s never too late to say you were wrong. Robert Jenrick is not simply the most shameless man in parliament. He is the most shameless man in Britain, the most shameless man on Earth. Quite possibly the most shameless man in history. It is not simply that Jenrick has no shame. He is like a black hole for shame, sucking in the embarrassment of people around him. Which will be quite handy in his new party, Reform.

Nothing became Jenrick’s time in the Conservative Party so much as the leaving of it. For years he had eased his way up the greasy pole, switching positions when necessary, a heating-seeking missile for whichever pose could help him advance, poster boy for the importance of self-belief over ability or integrity. And finally he was undone because he forgot to pick something up off a
