If one would have made me guess, I would have said Pan, Miesenböck, Boyden. But neither made it. Not to say that the winners didn't absolutely deserve it, but I think prizes like the Nobel need to be retired. Lately one can see in sharp relief the kind of damage the Fields Medal has caused to math.

PIs: when do you want students to reach out about postdoc position requests? It used to be that students had to reach out a year before graduation. A grad student who is graduating next spring was told by several people to reach out closer to graduation (also that she is a good fit). Is that new?

Still celebrating today's Nobel-winning role for Chlamydomonas research, I highlight new, exciting Chlamy discovery from the Lechtreck Lab @universityofga.bsky.social. There are different (maybe 9?) Polycystin complexes in flagellar subdomains involved in fast swimming! www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

Oh I shd add: Deisseroth’s work was (say it w me!) supported with public funding through federal science agencies incl NIH, NSF, and DARPA. And I daresay few political deciders in 2004 would have been excited to put algal proteins in HEK cells or neurons. Scientists knew, though.

I sat in on the interview of @deisseroth.bsky.social for an NIH Director's Pioneer Award (which he subsequently received). It is remarkable how much what he presented about his vision for optogenetics played out from work in his and other labs over the next decade. Bioengineering meets Psychiatry

People are layered and complex and weird and our diagnostic system is useful *and* wrong. Tech bros won’t see you calling them “crazy” but your friend who has battled with their mental health for their whole lives will. People with mental disorders are more likely to be victims than commit crimes.

OMB has not repeatedly proposed a 55%+ cut to NSF because of 'woke' research—even if you eliminated all of the grants flagged in the Cruz report, you wouldn't scratch 10% of the budget. It is because NSF heavily funds universities.
