Oh! and another feature I want to highlight since I loved it so much. Can't believe I almost forgot the path tracking. Cairn marks every step (and climb) you take throughout the WHOLE game, letting you see each and every time you fell or struggled or got lost. Wonderful game, @thegamebakers.com

Lastly, I want to reiterate that the atmosphere of the game was fantastic, particularly at the native villages of the mountain, and it is maintained throughout the harshest climbs, which are a joy to plan routes for and maneuvre and ration out resources and buffs to make it to the top safely.

Whenever you camp on the mountain, alongside repairing your pitons or sleeping and recovering, you are free to cook whatever monstrous combinations of food and drink you like. From herbal teas to goat milk fried trout with sugar.

As you are free to shuffle and jumble your items to fit as much as you can inside. I notably never struggled with managing any of my resources, and felt that I almost always had excess available, even with my self imposed challenge to carry random junk like broken cameras. Kami always provides!

The pitons function as an almost checkpoint system along each wall, as Aava's stamina might run out if you climb poorly or along uneasy paths, causing her to fall. The game plays around with this sometimes, with impenetrable surfaces that you cannot piton, and a rappelling mechanic to descend-

- repeatedly, though this is a minor grievance. It features a belay and piton system, with Aava having to manually plant the spikes into the wall, leading the player to have to guage the risk/reward of how far to travel between uses, as there is a limited amount to carry (Though I never ran out).

Moving on to actual gameplay. Cairn features a limb based movement system for the rock climbing portions, with automatic limb selection by default. I had very few issues with it, only ever a minor hiccup with limbs not trying to go onto the wrong surface or the same body parts being selected-

I'm tempted to go overboard on spoilers and analysis, but I'll hold back on that and say that whilst the players' time with Aava isn't long, she made an impression on me, and I think the talented VA work of Sophie Eleni really shines.

I didn't anticipate being as fascinated by Aava, the protagonist, as I ended up being. You learn about her mostly through her interactions with fellow climbers, one-sided calls from her agent and her partner, but also from her reactions to what you find on the mountain itself.

The entire game takes place on the mountain (with a bonus tutorial segment at a nearby climbing park), so you get really familiar with the climbing and survival mechanics, and more importantly, the characters on the mountain. The most important character besides Aava maybe being Kami itself.

together, with many of the the gameplay systems revolving around the titular "DEATHLOOP". This is what makes the game memorable and special to me, replaying levels isnt uncommon in video games, but it scratches an itch to have it be plot relevant and explainable. 11/?

I haven't even talked about the timeloop itself, which is what hooked me into the game. A singular island, locked in a 24 hour timeloop, of which only 2 (but actually 4) characters realise is looping, the rest believing every day is the first of many in the loop. This aesthetic carried over to the menus and UI, level design, and of course the soundtrack, which I'd say is worth a listen to on its own to truly feel out the vibes presented. The floating text representing the protag, Colt's, memories adds much to levels, and a deeper read into the world/him 9/?
