Saw AC/DC this summer - incredible show - and would have killed to have been able to go to STL to see FF opening for them last month. Only now realizing that between them there’s a combined 80+ years of being bands…

Just typical city council meeting, with talk of fixing potholes, updates from the parks department, and predictions of the imminent apocalypse. “On the current path, I think it is more likely than not that humanity loses control to these AIs, and it could end in human extinction.”

That’s a good framing, thanks - I try to directly engage with an argument being made and consciously tamp down the Godfather-like “you’re nothing to me now” tendency, lol, so that’s a good distinction.

It’s never outcome-based, but rather process/logic-based. Examples of ridiculously flawed prospective thinking that bring any other conclusions into question by association.

Re: that OER/inflation note, is there a behavioral bias that causes one to forever discount *all* of a person’s takes based on 1 astonishingly absurd one? “50 yrs of stability” is obvious, but several from others: “100% chance of recession”; “Powell should resign to protect Fed integrity”; etc.

It’s very silly, since they literally cannot even see highlights from them all by the time they need to submit the votes. Most often it’s a top 10-15, then very little thought to whatever they need to complete the rest of it. It is, however, content, and these days that’s all that matters.

Although several of those phrases should never have been committed to ink and paper, it is indeed in the printed edition. If I get asked questions about this, whether in meetings or by family members, I’ll be suing The Economist for damages.

And if we’re talking about the impact of another full-blown rate hike cycle, then sure. But if we’re looking at 2-3 hikes in total I’m not sure that materially changes the new development supply outlook.

On a long-term indexed view, it’s not hard to see where OER took off in 2021 and was a major contributor to overall inflation rates. But thus far at least, it has not been re-accelerating, though has been stuck north of 3%

Novel strain of the Sunday Scaries: worries that someone might ask you about Slutcon this week

I know a lot of older, extremely not-online, readers of The Economist and I’m worried they are going to have an aneurysm reading this. If the “sex with dead cows” line doesn’t get them the description of the “conference” from the “rationalist, sex researcher and prostitute” will.

"Tech right" are trying to discredit an AI slowdown by tying it to unsavoury advocates of effective altruism. A campaign group has attacked an Anthropic-backed outfit as "Sam Bankman-Fried 2.0". Some rationalists fear their association with AI safety may end up harming the cause. "I think it really does damage the credibility of a movement with 60-year-old voters in Ohio when it's hosting Slutcon and asking questions about sex with dead cows on its application forms," Scott Alexander, an influential blogger, has written on X. Slutcon is a conference set up by Aella, a rationalist, sex researcher and prostitute, where participants pay up to $18,000 to attend sessions on topics including "flirting for the submissive man" and "vaginal gymnastics". Two extremely cursed paragraphs, which just keep getting worse as they go. WTF.
"We are seeing demand from parents saying, 'I want my child in a travel program even if they're not necessarily on a competitive level to do that," said Jordan Baltimore, the chief executive of New York Empire Baseball, which has 1,100 young players in Manhattan and Long Island.
"They want to keep up with the Joneses, and they see their friends' kids always at these tournaments," said Gader Ibrahim, a baseball mom influencer from Orange County, Calif. She has three boys that play, ages 14, 11 and 7. One family in her social circle told her they took out a second mortgage on their home rather than forgo baseball, she said, adding, "I really do truly believe it is parents having FOMO."
